Knowing how to organize hair accessories can be trickier than it sounds. Items like clips and headbands are irregularly shaped and can quickly clutter up counter space, while hairpins and elastic ties are small and easy to lose. While stashing all your hair accessories in one place may be convenient, finding exactly what you're looking for can be hard.

“It is difficult because there are many different sizes, shapes, and functions when it comes to hair accessories,” says Ashley Streicher, celebrity hairstylist and R+Co Collective Member. “It can be difficult to throw all these different, unique, sometimes expensive hair things into one drawer.”

Luckily, there are plenty of creative and affordable ways to remedy this issue, even if you have a small space. We asked hairstylists and shopping experts all about how to organize hair accessories (along with their favorite storage product recs!), so you can easily find the right clip, pin, or scrunchie to complete your look without having to dig through your bathroom looking for it.

Start by decluttering

Before you begin to organize, start by sorting through all the hair accessories you own.

“I definitely recommend going through all of your hair items and cleaning out the clutter, first and foremost,” says Jen Reed, shopping expert and founder of fragrance brand Life in Lilac. “Once you've narrowed it down to the accessories and products you reach for most, make sure that the items you're reaching for daily (a brush, hair ties, favorite product, etc.) are in the most accessible place.”

Buy a storage basket

Easy and perfect for any neutral room, wicker baskets are a cute way to store hair accessories on your counters or shelves. They’re great for sorting scrunchies, statement hair pins, or headbands.

Try a stackable organization set

Need some help keeping your accessories organized? Get a sleek, stackable organization set.

“I love this stackable organization set because you can mix and match the containers for what fits best in your drawers, and they can store anything from jewelry to spare hair ties and bobby pins,” says Reed. “Anything that can keep me organized and save time as I'm running out the door is a win in my book.”

Hang your hair accessories

Over-the-door storage is a handy way to organize hair accessories. It will save you some extra drawer space, and you can hang it on any door near where you do your hair for easy access.

Invest in aesthetically pleasing storage

If you have to store your hair accessories out in the open, choose a bin or basket that looks like a chic decor object.

“It's always nice to have a catch-all container to help avoid clutter on top of bathroom counters or my nightstand,” says Reed. “Something like this container is still functional, but looks great on a vanity, nightstand, or in the bathroom. It's the perfect spot to store spare hair ties and clips without taking up too much space.”

Stash your collection in Ziploc bags

An easy and affordable way to store your hair accessories is in resealable bags of varying sizes.

“The quickest and least expensive way to store all your favorite bows, beads, scrunchies, and hair ties is a handy Ziploc bag!” says celebrity hairstylist Lurissa Ingrid. “Take some time to separate each item and label your bag. Then into your hair drawer or bag it goes. Great for traveling as well!”

You can also use silicone Stasher bags, which are durable, washable, and versatile enough for multiple purposes.

Find felt organizers for claw clips

Claw clips have officially made a comeback as a popular hair accessory. If you have a budding collection of fun designs, invest in a felt claw clip organizer to keep each one safe and easy to grab.

Store accessories immediately after use

Clutter can happen if you wait to put your hair accessories away once you’re done with them — or worse, you could lose them.

“Put them away immediately after use or it will become overwhelming,” says Ingrid. “If you’re like me, they will eventually end up in the trash can and it becomes a never-ending repurchasing cycle.” She recommends this bag to store hair accessories.

Use see-through storage options

Transparent containers keep your hair accessories contained without making it a mystery as to what's inside.

“Use a see-through storage option so you can easily identify and access them,” says Ingrid. “These totes are great for larger items. You can color-coordinate your items if you really want to get fancy!”

Repurpose household items

Good news for thrifty folks: You don’t have to invest in new containers to store your hair accessories.

“Get creative with repurposing everyday items like old Mason jars, small baskets, or even ice cube trays to store small items,” says Ingrid.

Keep your hair accessories in rotating holders

With their stacked tiers, these rotating hair accessory holders make it easy for you to avoid clutter while also allowing easy access. Plus, they allow you to display your cutest pieces.

Store your headbands in a headband holder

Besides minimizing clutter, a headband holder can also show off your entire collection.

“I LOVE having this acrylic headband holder out on my vanity to display all my beautiful headbands,” says Streicher. “It honestly makes me wear them more, because they're out where I can see them, and I just love how organized and pretty they look.”

Invest in a drawer organizer

Bathroom and vanity drawers can become unruly fast when filled with hair accessories, but a drawer organizer can maintain order.

“I love to use these lined acacia organizing trays inside a drawer or vanity,” says Streicher. “I love that they come in three different configurations for different-sized clips and pins. I use the 16-section one for my crystal pins, barrettes, and claw clips and the six-section one for my bows and bigger barrettes.”

Store in a protective plastic to-go container

Always on the go? Put your hair accessories in this retro-chic, formed plastic container that travels well and keeps everything in one place with lots of built-in organizing trays.
