Oregon's Mt. Hood Meadows Temporarily Suspends Operations

Mt. Hood Meadows in Oregon has done the unthinkable: shut the mountain down not for lack of snow, but precisely the opposite: because of it!

With a "ferocious blizzard" forecasted for Oregon today, officials at Mt. Hood Meadows announced that "with great storms come great responsibility and we have made the decision to suspend operations tomorrow, January 9."

"We are expecting 1 to 2 inches of moisture, meaning 12 – 20” of snow, as well as 50mph sustained winds out of the west."

Mt. Hood Meadows snow forecast is shaping up nicely, with a "heavy fall of snow, heaviest during Tue night. Temperatures will be below freezing (max 23°F on Thu night, min 16°F on Tue night). Mainly severe gales."

The severe gales falls under the umbrella of not so nice weather that comes with the snow. For the Pacific Northwest, the National Weather Service issued warnings to drivers that travel will be dangerous due to potential tornadoes and flooding rain affecting millions across that area of the US.

108 million people are under wind alerts, 43 million are under winter alerts and 59 million are under flood alerts.

Mt. Hood Meadows echoes this safety request, saying, "We want our team and our guests to be safe and stay home."

"We have also postponed Provide to Ride for Tuesday, January 30. For everyone who has made a purchase tomorrow we will be refunding that back to the card you used to pay with."

Well, that's nice of them!

"We also want to give everyone a heads up that after this storm it will take us some time to get everything back up and running so make sure to check the Conditions page for delays before heading up on Wednesday."

Ice on the lifts, grooming to be done, repairs to be made... as long as people get their powder days in somehow!

They will just after this storm, it sounds like.

"We look forward to seeing everyone back up here enjoying the snow soon!"
