Oprah Winfrey Put Up 26 Billboards Honoring Breonna Taylor in Louisville

Oprah Winfrey is not going to let Breonna Taylor’s name fade from the national conversation.

First she put Taylor, the 26-year-old Kentucky woman who was asleep in her home when police officers broke in and shot and killed her on March 13, on the cover of the August issue of O, The Oprah Magazine. It was the first time in 20 years Winfrey herself was not the cover star. Now the media mogul has erected a number of billboards featuring Taylor around Louisville.

According to local TV station WLKY, Winfrey and her team put up 26 billboards to represent the 26 years of Taylor’s life. Each sign features the O magazine cover along with a quote from Winfrey that reads, “If you turn a blind eye to racism, you become an accomplice to it.” The billboards also include a call to action: “Demand that the police involved in killing Breonna Taylor be arrested and charged. Visit UntilFreedom.com.” Per Until Freedom’s website, the intersectional social justice organization is “rooted in the leadership of diverse people of color to address systemic and racial injustice.”

Winfrey expressed her personal thoughts about Taylor and how she died in the August issue of her magazine.

“Breonna Taylor. She was just like you. And like everyone who dies unexpectedly, she had plans. Plans for a future filled with responsibility and work and friends and laughter. Imagine if three unidentified men burst into your home while you were sleeping. And your partner fired a gun to protect you,” she said. “And then mayhem. What I know for sure: We can’t be silent. We have to use whatever megaphone we have to cry for justice. And that is why Breonna Taylor is on the cover of O magazine. I cry for justice in her name.”

The police officers involved in the death of Breonna Taylor have still not been charged with any crimes.
