Oprah Recognizes the Brave Women of Iran

Last night, Oprah’s “The Life You Want” Class focused on gratitude. Joining Oprah was guest Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman, a humanistic psychologist, along with 12 Insiders. But, before the night officially kicked off, Oprah was moved to share her thoughts about the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, an Iranian woman who was arrested by the morality police for wearing her headscarf too loosely. On September 16, Amini died in police custody, just three days after her arrest. Since then, thousands of protesters in Iran have taken to the streets and people across the world have spoken out in support of Iranian women.
Oprah took a moment to acknowledge the courageous women of Iran and said that their movement toward justice is inspiring. “I applaud these women, and we speak your name, Mahsa Amini, and the names of all the other protesters who have lost their lives fighting for their right for free expression.”

Oprah: I wanted to just take a moment, if you’ll let me, to recognize the brave women of Iran who are in the fight for their lives. It was September 16th when Mahsa Amini died while in police custody after she was arrested for allegedly wearing her headscarf too loosely. She was only 22 years old. Ever since, protesters in Iran and across the world have been calling for justice for her death. These women and their supporters are taking to the streets, taking to social media, cutting their hair in an act of resistance, burning their headscarves—making sure we don’t forget Mahsa’s name. They have gotten arrested; they’ve been brutalized and even killed. They’re not only sacrificing their jobs but their lives, all to stand up for their rights and for freedom.
Oprah: Their fortitude is so inspiring to me, and the movement they’ve sparked is a shining example of what people can achieve when they band together in order to create change. So, I applaud these women, and we speak your name, Mahsa Amini, and the names of all the other protesters who have lost their lives fighting for their right to free expression.
