Oprah has just announced her latest Oprah’s Book Club pick: Elizabeth Strout’s Olive, Again. Readers were first introduced to the protagonist, Olive, in Strout’s 2008 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Olive Kitteridge, and at first, Oprah wasn't sure exactly how she felt about a sequel to the iconic original.

“When I heard Elizabeth Strout had written a second book with Olive at its center, I worried that time might have smoothed her rough edges," Oprah says. "Nope. Olive is older and wiser, but as cantankerous as ever, and she still makes me laugh out loud, and cry in recognition and empathy. I fell in love with Olive not despite her flaws, but because of them.”

Olive, Again was published on October 15 and became an immediate New York Times bestseller. This is Elizabeth Strout’s seventh book; her first, Amy and Isabelle, was published in 1998 and was made into a television movie by Harpo, while Olive Kitteridge became an HBO mini-series starring Frances McDormand, Richard Jenkins, and Bill Murray.

On Instagram at @oprahsbookclub, readers can follow along as Oprah sparks discussions around the books’ themes—among them loneliness, aging, love, family, humor, and friendship. And on January 17, a sit-down between Oprah and Elizabeth Strout will air on Apple TV+.

When Oprah recently asked Strout what compelled her to write another Olive book, the author said: “I thought I was done with her. Then a few years ago, she showed up again—I could feel her presence behind me. When Olive presents herself to me, I say, ‘Let’s go and just get out of her way.'"

Olive, Again is the second selection in Oprah's newly-launched Book Club with Apple, a partnership created to connect readers around the world through the books they can access immediately on their devices. Her first Apple pick was Ta-Nehisi Coates’s The Water Dancer, which was announced in September and became an instant #1 New York Times bestseller.
