Opinion: Those Bubble Mirrors All Over Pinterest Are Hideous

Hot take alert: Mirrors should never try to be anything other than mirrors. They already serve a super significant purpose, which is (and I say this in the most unvain way) to let me check myself out. If these reflective pieces didn't exist, I would probably have food stains all over my face, spinach stuck in my teeth, and lint all over my clothes. I mean I still do, but mirrors have at least saved me on numerous occasions from walking into a room full of people with powdered donut lips.

But you know what I find really unsightly? Taking mirrors and transforming them into bubbles (???)... then hanging it on the wall and touting it as... art? First of all, (again, not a narcissist), I can't always see my entire face in these bubble mirrors. The really small bubble mirrors only allow me to see one part of my face at a time, which makes it hard to apply makeup and whatnot. On the contrary, the really big mirror displays are just kind of overwhelming.

But functionality aside, unless the room has an ocean theme, why are people arranging these flashy bubbles on the wall as if they're some beautiful art piece anyway? They're just circles, that reflect what's already visible in the room, and have no color or style to them. What is so striking about oddly shaped circles? Mirrors are not modern art. Take your tasteless circles off the wall.

Don’t get me wrong, I love over-the-top designs. I just don’t find anything sensational about arranging tiny mirrors on the wall in some abnormal polka dot pattern, when you could instead pick out an elegant portrait, tapestry, or even just place a regular-sized mirror with a tasteful frame to fill the space. That's not to mention, if there's a window in the room, the sun is probably going to reflect off the collection of hideous mirrors and create an obnoxious glare. Let's not forget, there have been cases where fires have started from sunlight reflecting off mirrors in the home.

Please, I beg of you: Bring back the antiquated mirrors of the past. If you fancy a decorative mirror set-of-three, or even a squigly mirror, that's fine too. It’s when folks try to transform mirrors into some contemporary wall display that totally ignores a mirror's primary function, that I get a little uncomfortable. My advice: If you ever need a piece to hang on your wall, opt for one that will add a pop of color to the interior, not just reflect what’s already in the room.
