The last Monday in May is traditionally Memorial Day, a time to honor fallen U.S. service members. It marks the unofficial start of summer and the cap of a three-day weekend.

Here are some things you might need to know for the holiday.

Yes, Memorial Day is a federal holiday. As the country observes the day with cookouts and patriotic parades, federal and state government offices will also take the day off.

When is Memorial Day 2024?

Memorial Day is Monday, May 27, 2024.

Are banks closed on Memorial Day?

Most banks will be closed Monday for Memorial Day.

Will the post office be open on Memorial Day?

Don’t count on being able to send packages on Memorial Day. All state and federal government facilities will be closed Monday, including the United State Postal Service. Regular UPS and FedEx are not offering pick-up or delivery services, but both have critical services that will be open Monday.

Are stores closed on Memorial Day?

Costco stores will be closed for Memorial Day, but most retailers in the Peoria area, including grocery stores, will be open. Check individual retailers for their Monday hours of operation.

The Shoppes at Grand Prairie will observe holiday hours and will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Individual retailers may vary, but most will observe holiday hours. Northwoods Mall will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All federal and state offices will be closed from legislature to the courthouse on Monday, May 27.

Most Peoria County government facilities also will be closed Monday, including the Peoria County Courthouse, the Veterans Assistance Commission, the Election Commission, Animal Protection Services (PCAPS), Highway Department offices, and the Peoria City/County Health Department.

The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office, Jail and Juvenile Detention Center will all be staffed on Monday. However, the records office and in-person visitations will be closed.

City of Peoria offices will be closed on Memorial Day.

How will my trash get picked up on Memorial Day?

In Peoria, trash pick-up will be delayed one day in observance of the holiday.
