What is Only Up? Frustrating climbing game is causing Twitch streamers to ‘rage quit’

Only Up! is a digital game taking over the gamer world and it’s not necessarily for a good reason.

Only Up! is available on Steam and puts the player in the perspective of the main character as it asks users to physically climb over sometimes improbable situations, like giant feet floating in the air, balloons and construction scaffolding.

The game originated in China and was developed by SC-KR games, according to Polygon.

While the game features the enticing premise of a young boy who wants to “rise up” from his current living situation, it also requires players to accomplish that by climbing up, and up, and up all throughout the game.

Risking it all for the fall

The goal is to reach the very top of the world, which is both literal and figurative for the game’s main character.

But if you fall?

It’s over — and because there is no option to save your progress, the moment a player falls, the game has to start over completely.

The resulting endless climb — and sometimes ensuing fall at a critical moment — is frustrating players all over the world.

Gamers are sharing their frustrations on platforms like Twitch, YouTube and of course, TikTok.

“POV: You just wasted 3 hours of your life,” wrote @moreclixtv. “I fell after 3 hours.”

“Bro went through the 5 stages of grief,” commented @__.anorchy.__.

When a player does fall, they also fall back very slowly through every obstacle that they successfully climbed in the first place.

“FALLING DREAMING,” described @goofy.giff.

“I had only 15% left and this happened,” described @vizualizah. “Pain.”

Rage quitting

The game is so frustrating to players that it’s inspired many to partake in “rage quitting,” giving up on the game completely, even sometimes mid-stream.

“The game is poorly designed, to make it go viral by reactions from content creators,” observed @hobo.king.niklz.

Fellow gamers even watched as famous gamers like Foolish (@foolish_gamers) raged their way through attempts at the game.

Reaching the top

But even through the rage, @foolish_gamers went on to beat the game on his first day after an impressive 295 minutes.

@vizualizah also didn’t give up, posting only days later that he finally beat the game after several attempts.

And it appears that the rage and pain of falling in Only Up! Is combated only by the joy and happiness when gamers do finally reach the top.
