The one style trick you need to know for spending Christmas at home

If you’re a mom preparing for Christmas at home, like Karen Leano of @parisandalatte, you already have a laundry list of to-do’s on your plate. From decorating to planning the menu, the last thing you want to do is spend precious time figuring out what to wear. Fortunately, Leano is a pro at mastering at-home loungewear that still looks and feels luxurious.

For Yahoo Lifestyle’s #MyStyle video series (above), we tasked Leano with creating the perfect outfit to wear for a festive holiday at home. “When I’m at home I want to be as comfortable as possible, so you can usually find me in leggings or joggers,” Leano tells Yahoo Lifestyle.

But for the holidays, she jazzed up her usual joggers and chose some made of luxurious crushed green velvet. She styled the velvet pants with a satin pink-blush cami and layered them underneath a soft, textured cardigan. “The other thing I love about winter is faux fur,” she says, which informed her decision to finish off the look with a pair of pink faux-fur slides. The key style trick is to pick one luxurious loungewear piece and work around it. In Leano’s case, it was her crushed velvet green trousers, which were still comfortable and “breathable by the waist,” she says,” but still felt “dressy.”

The idea of “dressing up” at home is a concept that has grown since self-care has swept the wellness industry in recent years. It often includes putting on a chic pair of silky pajamas at home and applying a hydrating face mask while relaxing on the couch surrounded by scented candles. It’s meditative, relaxing and meant to rejuvenate your mind and body.

“I think people are realizing how important self-care really is. … I think there [was] a stigma before that; if you spend time on you, you’re almost being selfish,” says Leano. “But I think people are realizing now that because they’re always working — whether you’re a mom, or even if you’re a stay [at] home mom now — how important is to focus on [themselves].” According to the mom of two, the alternative is worse, because you can’t “be 100 percent for the family, or just for life in general.”

As you plan your own festive holiday at home, Leano suggests searching through your own closet first. “I think that we have so many pieces that we probably … don’t get to wear on an everyday basis.” Even if it’s something that you wouldn’t normally wear at home, like a sequin top, Leano suggests, it’s still a great way to mix and match it with contrasting textures like a comfy pair of joggers.
