One Piece manga chapter 1107 will go down in history as one of the most explosive and utterly packed chapters we’ve ever seen from the series. The Egghead Arc has been an absolute rollercoaster in terms of lore drops and familiar characters unexpectedly making an appearance, but this chapter takes the cake. Not only do we get a page turn that made me audibly gasp, but we finally have a full picture of exactly what Blackbeard wants, and how he will do it.

First, a very quick recap of my reasoning going into this: freedom is the theme of One Piece. Pirates go to see because they are free to do so, Luffy loves to punch people who restrict freedom, and almost every arc ends with an individual or group that was being oppressed, that is now liberated. On the inverse, the World Government’s headquarters thrives on slavery, and a few chapters back it was confirmed that Blackbeard deals in slavery too. In case subtext isn’t your strong suit, I’ll lay it out for you: the people enslaving others are the bad guys.

Blackbeard is undeniably a bad guy, as are the World Government and the Five Elders who sit at the top of the world – literally and figuratively. But that does not mean they’re on the same side. In this chapter Van Augur, Third Ship Captain of the Blackbeard Pirates, tells Elder Saturn what the end goal is: “The world.”

This is the first time any foe in One Piece has properly threatened world domination. Hody Jones may have had grand aspirations, but he didn’t even make it out of Fishman Island. Blackbeard and his crew are one of the Four Emperors, they’ve taken out Trafalgar Law and likely stolen his rubbings of the Poneglyphs, his crew have kidnapped Charlotte Pudding who can read the Poneglyphs, and now Catarina Devon and Van Augur appear before Elder Saturn on Egghead. These aren’t idle threats – this is a plan in motion, and succeeding, from the only man to scar Red Hair Shanks. Luffy and the Straw Hats aren’t even aware that it’s happening.

The big question is what the next step will be, and in this chapter, Catarina Devon’s actions lay out the plan plainly. You might’ve overlooked this while mixed up in the hype of the Giant Pirates showing up, Sanji blocking an attack from Kizaru, and Luffy laying down a Dawn Gatling on one of the world’s highest powers, but when Catarina Devon and Van Augur appear before Saturn, Devon simply taps her hand on Saturn’s leg and says “There. Mission complete.”

The mission, simply, was for Catarina Devon to touch one of the Five Elders. No battle with the Straw Hats, no taking Vegapunk’s technology and knowledge, not even taking hold of his weaponry. It was just to touch Saturn. Catarina Devon’s Devil Fruit, as Oda reminds us in her introduction, is the Dog-Dog Fruit Mythical Type Model: Nine-Tailed Fox. Naruto fans won’t need this laid out for them, but the nine-tailed fox is a Chinese mythological creature that is a shapeshifter, able to transform themselves into a beautiful man or woman.

We saw this in an earlier skirmish with former Shichibukai (Seven Warlords) member Moriah on Beehive Island. Devon was able to create clones of Absalom to trick Moriah, before revealing that he is very dead. We can assume that this fruit works similarly to Bentham Bon Kurei’s Clone-Clone Fruit, where upon touching someone he can transform into a perfect clone of them. Devon can now, very likely, create 100% accurate clones of Elder Saturn, a character that has the ability to command and control the Pacifista, in addition to the Seraphim weapons.

But that’s not enough. At the end of this chapter, Caribou runs into Devon and Augur, and begs to join them. It might seem innocent enough on the face of it, but Caribou’s adventures with the Straw Hats means he has overheard conversations about Princess Shirahoshi being the ancient weapon Posseidon, on top of the weapon Pluton, that rests beneath the Flower Capital of Wano. Caribou will undoubtedly reveal this information to Blackbeard.

You see where this is going, right? Blackbeard’s plan likely lies beyond the One Piece. He will take the knowledge from Laugh Tale after becoming Pirate King and use it to overthrow the World Government – not for the liberation of the people though, he will simply supplant them as the new ruler of the world. With potentially two of the ancient weapons, in addition to the forces of the Pacifista and Seraphim at his command, Blackbeard could easily defeat the forces of the Navy.

That’s the end goal of Marshall D. Teech. He’s not after fame and fortune, he wants the world, and he’s been following an intricately laid plan to take it. He knows the stakes, and what he has to do, and I think he’s going to do it.

We always assumed that the World Government was the final foe Luffy had to topple before the end of the series, but what if Blackbeard becomes the Pirate King first? What if Blackbeard ends up being the ruler of the world, and Luffy has to take him down? An even better question, since Shanks knows far more than he lets on and has indicated his desire to acquire the One Piece, will this result in a battle between the Blackbeard Pirates and Red Hair Pirates on Laugh Tale?

Only a truly hype chapter would have this scene be a footnote.
Eiichiro Oda, Shonen Jump, Shueisha

It’s a lot to take in, but the takeaway is this: Blackbeard is after the world, and he might just be able to take it.
