While renovating her family's Fort Worth home, design blogger and HGTV star Grace Mitchell made it her mission to embrace the 100-year-old house's charming period details. Among them: the wood staircase that leads from the main floor to the second story. "The curvature of the stair rail was so beautiful, so I wanted to find a way to highlight the original wood," says Mitchell. Most importantly, "I wanted it to be something fun and nontraditional!"

The designer decided to cover the stair risers and stringer (aka the exposed outer part of the staircase under the treads) in a classic striped wallpaper by Farrow & Ball. Adding pattern to the oft-overlooked area gave the space an extra-custom feel. The light blue stripes also provide an unexpected pop of color paired with the millwork, which Mitchell had painted in Farrow & Ball's Breakfast Room Green.

"We're lucky that most of the trim and charm of the original home was there when we bought it," says Mitchell. "We just added a fresh and modern spin!"
