Have One of These Old Dimes Around? You Could Be Looking at a $2 Million Paycheck

The next time you go fishing through your coins, we recommend you take a closer look at the dimes.

Specifically, for the coveted 1894-S Barber dime. This coin is exceptionally rare, with only nine of the original 24 still known to exist—and all but two of them are accounted for.

In 2016 one sold for $1,997,500 at an auction in Tampa, and now another one is set to go up for auction later this month. Bidding starts at an eye-watering $850,000.

“It is one of the classic rarities in all of numismatics, a legendary coin in the same league as the 1804 silver dollar and 1913 Liberty Head nickel,” Stack's Bowers Galleries, the auction house offering this latest 1894-S Barber dime, writes in its description.

1894-S Barber dimes are 90% silver and 10% copper. According to CoinWeek, the 1894-S Barber dime is part of a collection of dimes, quarters, and half dollars, bearing the signature of Charles E. Barber, the Chief Engraver.

“Notably, his coin designs are considered to be some of the most inspiring in all of U.S coin history,” New Orleans-based coin dealer Blanchard and Company writes. “Barber’s designs reflected the end of a great age in American coin art.”
