One killed, one wounded in exchange of gunfire between cars near West Palm Beach

WEST PALM BEACH — An exchange of gunfire between the occupants of two vehicles in suburban West Palm Beach early Tuesday left one person dead and another wounded, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office reported.

Investigators say the vehicles were traveling on Westgate Avenue near Congress Avenue shortly before 12:30 a.m. when the occupants shot at each other, causing one vehicle to lose control and crash into a utility pole.

Deputies found a man dead nearby and one vehicle just north of the intersection with heavy front and side damage. The other vehicle was found unoccupied on the 1000 block of Congress. It had front end damage and several bullet defects, PBSO said.

Investigators say the man who died was an occupant of the vehicle that struck the utility pole. A second shooting victim was taken to a hospital to treated for a gunshot wound to the arm. It was not clear whether that person was connected to either of the vehicles.

PBSO did not disclose the name of either shooting victim, or discuss a motive for the attack.

According to the PBSO report, unknown occupants were observed exiting the vehicle that lost control and fleeing to the east as they were shot at by unidentified people believed to have been occupants of the other vehicle.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.

Tips can be reported to Crime Stoppers of Palm Beach County at 800-458-TIPS (8477). Tips can be submitted anonymously by using the "See Something" feature on the PBSO smartphone app.
