From Town & Country

While the Duchess of Cambridge certainly fancies a re-wear, often shopping in her closet for major appearances, and her sister-in-law the Duchess of Sussex is well-known for her penchant for wearing ethical and sustainable brands, there's another European royal who has under-the-radar been championing sustainable fashion for many years: Princess Mary of Denmark.

The Danish Princess wore not just one, but two versions of the same dress in the last week, one red, one ivory, that she has worn multiple times over the last twelve years. The dress in question is a minimal boat neck design by Birgit Hallstein with a subtle belted waist. Princess Mary wore her ivory version of the gown to join Crown Prince Frederik and Queen Margrethe II in Copenhagen at the New Year's diplomatic reception on January 2, accessorizing the look with various official accessories of ceremonial dress including pins and a blue sash, which represents the Order of the Elephant.

The simple cut of the dress makes for the perfect canvas to display said accoutrement, which is likely why the Australian-born royal has worn it three times in the past five years: for the New Year's Banquet in 2015, for a state visit in March 2015 and for the New Year's diplomatic reception in 2016.

Just the night before, Princess Mary had donned her sumptuous burgundy velvet version of the stunning gown, which she has worn several times over the last twelve years, even with slight alterations to the neckline. She chose to wear that dress to celebrate the New Year’s reception at Amalienborg Palace, on January 1. Clearly, the royal knows when a specific style works for her. Prior to that, she notably wore the dress to the 2007 New Year's Eve Gala in 2007, in February 2007 to celebrate the 70th birthday of Norwegian King Harald, and the 2014 New Year's banquet in Copenhagen.

Much like with her ivory version of the frock, the minimal lines allow for ceremonial accessories to be displayed without any busy-ness.

If anything is clear, Princess Mary is more than proof that if you find a cut that works for you, get it in multiple colors and then wear over and over again for years to come without a second thought.
