How One Designer Transformed a Nursery Into a Teenage Girl's Dream Room on a Budget

“I personally installed it by hand,” says Amy Sklar, referring to the vintage wallpaper tree around which she designed a bedroom for her daughter, Daisy, when she was just a baby. So when it came to revamping the room into a more teen-friendly space, the sentimental installation—which features a 3D birdhouse that lights up—was the one element they both wanted to keep. Everything else—save for the Roman shades made of Ferrick Mason fabric, which they also agreed to use as a launching point—was replaced or rejiggered.
The overhaul called for painting the walls in Benjamin Moore’s Healing Aloe, reupholstering the loveseat pullout in a Pindler performance velvet, and upgrading to a more shapely bed (by Jenny Lind for Crate & Kids). “Daisy and I both wanted a room that would continue to grow with her, so we chose neutral and classic pieces to anchor the space including the black bed, the graphic rug, and the emerald green loveseat,” Sklar shares. “Then we could add fun pops of color in other pieces that may change over time.”
The 16-year-old, who attends a performing arts high school in Los Angeles, wanted to incorporate graphic elements to temper “the softer, pastel moments in the room,” Sklar notes. She also needed “a built-in desk area and lots of plants, as she’s a burgeoning plant-mom,” the designer adds—so they sprinkled in several planters from Etsy, Target, and Sunset Nursery.
Sklar enjoyed being able to weave “an entire palette of colors and textures that reads young, but also feels fully realized and completely transformed,” she says. And she didn’t have to break the bank to achieve the look that they wanted: The drawers, desk, chair, peg board, toy basket, and shelves were all sourced from IKEA, while the rug came from Home Depot and the wall art and bathroom wallpaper were happy Urban Outfitters finds.
“My favorite thing about this room is that she gravitated toward a bohemian vibe that I also had as a teenager,” Sklar admits, pointing to the tarot card wall hangings (from Amazon) as proof. “They are totally something that I would have had in my room at her age, and she chose them completely on her own,” she notes. “It was a great little moment of connection.”
