Austin Butler’s groundbreaking performance as the King of Rock and Roll in Elvis has earned him a Golden Globe, an Oscar nomination, and one seemingly permanent Southern drawl. Since the debut of the Baz Luhrmann biopic, the California native has sounded strikingly similar to Elvis Presley, raising eyebrows from fans and ex-girlfriends alike.

Following his Golden Globes win, Austin addressed the uncanny accent. “I don’t even think about it,” he said. “I don’t think I sound like him still, but I guess I must ‘cause I hear it a lot… I often liken it to when somebody lives in another country for a long time, and I had three years where that was my only focus in life, so I’m sure that there’s just pieces of my DNA that will always be linked in that way.”

But Austin is now ready to say goodbye to his Elvis voice. During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show on February 3, the actor revealed his plans to drop the drawl.

“I am getting rid of the accent, but I have probably damaged my vocal cords with all that singing,” Austin said, per Page Six. “One song took 40 takes!”

We don’t know how long it'll take Austin to give up the voice, but one thing we know for sure — it doesn’t make an appearance in Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune: Part Two. The actor stars as Feyd-Rautha, and according to his costar Dave Bautista, he sounds nothing like The King in the sequel, but is “just the sweetest guy you'll ever meet.”

“I don't know who this guy was, but it’s not Austin Butler. It’s not Elvis. His voice is different, his look is different,” Dave told USA Today in a February 2 interview. “Everything about his demeanor is terrifying.”

We can’t help but wonder where Austin’s voice will go from here.
