OMFA's 'Cultural Crafts Camp I' registration now open

The first in the 2024 series of free art camps at the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art is scheduled June 4 to June 7 for ages 6 to 15.

“Cultural Crafts Camp I” will offer a different experience each day in a variety of media and will be led by local artists and educators. Students will explore crafts from other cultures including Russian nesting dolls, Mexican maracas, Japanese lanterns and African masks.

Classes will take place in the museum’s Ryan Sculpture Park and in ArtLand, the museum’s interactive art studio.

The camp theme is designed to interpret the current exhibition, “Cultural Perspectives” — a showcase of more than 75 works of art by a roster of accomplished artists and craftsmen.

Selected works from the “Cultural Crafts Camp I” camp will be chosen for display later in the summer in the museum’s Waymond O. Morris Young at Art Gallery.

Morning sessions scheduled 9 to 11 a.m. are designed for ages 6 to 10, while afternoon classes from 1 to 3 p.m. are planned for ages 11 to 15.

The free camp programming, now in its 19th season, is the only local fine arts camp specifically designed to reach the community’s financially challenged children, with half of the seats in each class are reserved for registrants from local community service organizations. After those are filled, reservations from the general public are confirmed.

Registration is now open for the “Cultural Crafts Camp I” and may be completed by calling the museum at 270-685-3181 or by emailing info@omfa.us.
