It's the most '90s version of the year's hottest shoe.

I think I’m reverting to my teenage ways: My face is pimply, I’m patiently awaiting a new Zac Efron movie, and a pop star who sings about first heart breaks is probably going to be my most-played artist of 2023. It’s Olivia Rodrigo’s world and I’m simply living in it.

Not only has the singer’s music made it onto all of my playlists, but her punk-preppy style has become a staple on my fall mood board. And this weekend she wore a look I am dying to recreate, pairing an oversized houndstooth coat from Reformation with 2023’s hottest shoes.

Her chunky Mary Janes, which she warmed up with both black tights and white tube socks, might be at the top of my fall wish list. The style put a practical spin on the school-girl shoes that dominated the past year, with a thick sole meant for walking and wear without looking like orthotics. The ‘90s-inspired, T-strap shoes are what I want to wear with everything from mini skirts and tights to baggy jeans and equally baggy sweaters — and right now, select colors of her exact style are on sale at Zappos.

I wasn’t shocked to learn she’d opted for a pair by Dr. Martens. Editors and celebrities, including Meg Ryan, repeatedly wear the brand, with an InStyle writer once saying that they’re “the only shoes that are comfortable and durable enough to withstand [their] everyday wear.” Rodrigo’s exact style, the 8065 Mary Jane in Black Smooth, is designed with a cushioned footbed, non-slip outsoles, two straps that allow for the perfect fit (in addition to looking cute), and a beautiful leather exterior.

And according to shoppers, they’re as functional as they are fashionable. “They look great with jeans and with dresses [and] skirts…[are] work appropriate, and capable of handling everything Boston weather throws at them — snow, rain, [and] cobblestone streets,” wrote one shopper who noted that their last pair lasted 10 years. Another long-time fan wrote that they returned to the Mary Janes they loved in her 20s as a now-40 year old because of the shoe’s style and comfort. “I wore them at work and they've [been] so comfortable since day one. I didn't even have to break them in,” they said. “[The] fit is perfect…and the padded footbed is everything,” wrote another customer, who added that they’re “surprisingly comfortable right away [and] lighter on the foot than they look.” And per another person, “I wore them for the first time to IKEA this weekend, and for the first time ever, made it out of there without aching feet, so, enough said.”

Olivia Rodrigo’s perfect fall ‘fit convinced me I needed these versatile throwback shoes, so I’m grabbing them from Zappos while select colors start at just $92.
