SOUR has officially landed on the small screen.
On Friday, March 25, Olivia Rodrigo: Driving Home 2 U (A Sour Film) premiered exclusively on Disney+, taking fans behind the scenes of how Olivia's debut album SOUR was made. The concert film features never-before-seen footage as Olivia road trips from Salt Lake City — where she started recording her heartbreak anthems — to Los Angeles.
Along the way, she recounts the making of the Grammy-nominated album and the challenges that came with becoming an overnight sensation at just 17 years old. She opened up about the heartache and experiences that inspired her viral hits, such as her debut single, "Drivers License." From a diary entry marked July 13, 2020, Olivia read, "I got my driver’s license today, a very highly anticipated achievement. All my relatives called to congratulate me. I realized part of the reason I wanted to get my license so bad was because of… this boy. I always felt bad about being too young to be able to drive over to see him. Too young to have any real freedom. I always thought he should be with a girl who had those liberties. I feel his hold on me loosen more and more lately. That’s a lovely feeling. I’m still very much not able to fall for anyone else, though. I can’t even fathom it at the moment."
The film also featured brand new arrangements of tracks and performances of 11 of her hit songs in eccentric locations along the 690-mile journey. And while the *entire* film is an absolute gift for SOUR stans everywhere, Olivia revealed in an interview with Variety that there's definitely one "treat" towards the end: "I was just looking at a bunch of my old voice memos when we were making the film, and I found that one and I was like, 'Oh that’s really good!,'" she said. "It never came out so I thought, let’s just put it as a voice memo in the film and maybe it’s something that people will like. But I don’t actually think it will ever come out, which I think is kinda cool. It’s a little treat at the end of the movie."
Olivia didn't disclose when exactly we can expect new music from her, so we'll just have to remain patient for now.
“This is a unique film experience where for the first time, fans will understand how her album came to be and why it was such a personal journey for Olivia,” Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, said in a statement. “This is not a concert film per se, but really, an opportunity to experience first-hand how Olivia Rodrigo became one of the biggest music stars of the day — and a chance to see her perform the songs from SOUR like never before.”
The film dropped exclusively on Disney+ on Friday, March 25.
