Since GUTS came out on September 8, 2023, fans are speculating who Olivia Rodrigo’s “Lacy” lyrics are about and we’ve read some interesting theories.

“For me, this album is about growing pains and trying to figure out who I am at this point in my life,” Rodrigo said in a press release about her new album. “I feel like I grew 10 years between the ages of 18 and 20—it was such an intense period of awkwardness and change. I think that’s all just a natural part of growth, and hopefully, the album reflects that.” The cover photo of the single includes a black-and-white profile of the artist with a lavender bandaid covering her jugular on her neck, referencing the 1968 vampire film Dracula Has Risen from the Grave.

When addressing speculation that “vampire” (off Guts as well) was about her mentor/rumored enemy Taylor Swift, Rodrigo told The Guardian, “I mean, I never want to say who any of my songs are about. I’ve never done that before in my career and probably won’t. I think it’s better to not pigeonhole a song to being about this one thing.”

That doesn’t mean fans won’t speculate—hard—so understandably they’re all wondering what Olivia Rodrigo’s “Lacy” lyrics are about.

There are two dominant theories on social media as to what Olivia Rodrigo’s “Lacy” lyrics are about.

One, and we think this is the strongest theory, is that it’s about Rodrigo’s close friend Gracie Abrams. The biggest clue, fans say, is the lyrics “Like ribbons in your hair”—Gracie is known for wearing ribbons. But there are also other references, not least of all the fact that Lacy rhymes with Gracie.

Then again, the lyrics could reference Rodrigo’s rival Sabrina Carpenter. The ribbons lyrics apply to her too, as well as the “Dazzling starlet, Bardot reincarnate” reference, which as one fan on Reddit pointed out: “There’s a photoshoot Sabrina did last year that was basically a throwback to Brigitte Bardot (and kinda ties into what Liv has said about this album being about her 19th year).”

At the very least, “Lacy” is a polarizing song on the album. Those who love it have interpreted it as a potential queer anthem. “To me, this sounded like a pretty straightforward bisexual realization song. All the parts about her self-loathing aren’t self-loathing because she hates that she wants to be this girl. Instead, the self-loathing is due to struggling with admitting to herself that she likes girls,” wrote one fan.

In sticking with speculation that the song could be about Sabrina, another fan observed. “I don’t think of it as romantic love at all, I definitely agree that this is probably about Sabrina Carpenter and how envious she is/was of her. The Bardot reference, the ribbons in her hair (Sabrina frequently wears her hair half-up with a large ribbon tied into a bow), the last verse about being jealous of her and worshipping her.”

Olivia Rodrigo’s “Lacy” lyrics

Lacy, oh, Lacy, skin like puff pastry
Aren’t you the sweetest thing on this side of Hell?
Dear angel Lacy, eyes white as daisies
Did I ever tell you that I’m not doin’ well?

Ooh, I care, I care, I care
Like perfume that you wear, I linger all the time
Watching, hidden in plain sight
Ooh, I try, I try, I try
But it takes over my life, I see you everywhere
The sweetest torture one could bear

Smart, sexy Lacy, I’m losin’ it lately
I feel your compliments like bullets on skin
Dazzling starlet, Bardot reincarnate
Well, aren’t you the greatest thing to ever exist?

Ooh, I care, I care, I care
Like ribbons in your hair, my stomach’s all in knots
You got the one thing that I want
Ooh, I try, I try, I try
Try to rationalize, people are people, but
It’s like you’re made of angel dust

Oh, oh-oh, oh-oh
Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh-oh
Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh

Lacy, oh, Lacy, it’s like you’re out to get me
You poison every little thing that I do
Lacy, oh, Lacy, I just loathe you lately
And I despise my jealous eyes and how hard they fell for you
Yeah, I despise my rotten mind and how much it worships you
