Olivia Rodrigo Addresses Taylor Swift Feud Rumors: ‘I Don’t Have Beef With Anyone’

Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts press tour continues, with the singer appearing on Rolling Stone’s latest cover. Once more, she was asked about rumors of an alleged feud between her and Taylor Swift. She dismissed them.

“I don’t have beef with anyone,” she said. “I’m very chill. I keep to myself. I have my four friends and my mom, and that’s really the only people I talk to, ever. There’s nothing to say. There’s so many Twitter conspiracy theories. I only look at alien-conspiracy theories.”

Fans speculated that the relationship between the two stars might have soured when Swift got a retroactive songwriter credit for “Deja Vu” due to accusations that its bridge sounded similar to Swift’s “Cruel Summer.” (Rodrigo spoke in April 2021 about being inspired by “Cruel Summer.” In July 2021, a songwriting credit for Swift was added to the track.) Swift and her “Cruel Summer” co-writer Jack Antonoff now get 50 percent of royalties from the song. Swift also has a co-writer credit on Sour’s “1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back” because Rodrigo interpolated Swift’s “New Year’s Day.”

Rodrigo was asked by Rolling Stone about the belated co-writer credit additions on Sour, including to Paramore on “Good 4 U.” “I was a little caught off guard,” she said. “At the time it was very confusing, and I was green and bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Is that the phrase?”

She didn’t specify whether she was forced to give Swift and Paramore credits. “It’s not something that I was super involved in,” she said. “It was more team-on-team. So, I wouldn’t be the best person to ask.”

She was also asked whether she would demand credit from a younger artist in that situation. “I don’t think I would ever personally do that,” she said. “But who’s to say where I’ll be in 20, 30 years. All that I can do is write my songs and focus on what I can control.”

Rodrigo first spoke about the Taylor Swift feud rumors to The Guardian last week. She was dismissive then too. A reporter asked her about the fan theories saying her lead single “Vampire” was about Swift.

“How do I answer this?” she began. “I mean, I never want to say who any of my songs are about. I’ve never done that before in my career and probably won’t. I think it’s better to not pigeonhole a song to being about this one thing.” She then said of Swift specifically, “I was very surprised when people thought that.”

With regards to song writing and plagiarism claims, Rodrigo said that it was “disappointing to see people take things out of context and discredit any young woman’s work.”
