Olivia Colman Is Royal Perfection in the New Teaser for The Crown

Netflix announced some news today: The Crown is on its way back.

After months of teasing fans with casting news—Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth, Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip, Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles, Emma Corrin as Princess Diana, and Emerald Fennell as Camilla Parker Bowles—the streaming giant has finally, finally given us a glimpse at the fictional royal family. Today, they announced the premiere date of the new season (November 17) with a teaser trailer starring the one-and-only Olivia Colman.

The video shows an door ajar in Buckingham Palace. Slowly, it pans on the ornate room behind—pink furnished chairs, a landscape painting in a gilded frame. Colman’s Queen Elizabeth walks into the frame in full, formal, royal regalia: crown, gown, and a blue sash adorned with honorific badges. She stares at the camera as dramatic music plays in the background.

It’s been a long wait for The Crown fans: the last season premiered in December 2017, meaning it will have been nearly a two-year gap between Season 2 and Season 3. The show also completely recast all of its characters—it’s rumored that there will be a large time jump between the two seasons, so the actors had to be age-appropriate. Way back before the premiere of Season 1, series creator Peter Morgan explained his decision to Variety: “You can’t ask someone to act middle-aged. Someone has to bring their own fatigue to it. The feelings we all have as 50-year-olds are different than the feelings we all have as 30-year-olds. That informs everything we do.”

Will more breadcrumbs be released in the next three months? Perhaps. But for now, this brief preview—which quickly started trending on Twitter—has got fans clamoring: Long live the (fictional) Queen, Olivia Colman.
