Olivia Colman’s Take on Royal Dressing Is Fit for a Queen

We’re still two weeks away from seeing Olivia Colman’s portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II on Netflix’s The Crown, but that hasn’t stopped the actress from having a real-life brush with royalty. This morning at Buckingham Palace, Colman received her Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her services to the world of drama. In a bespoke Prince of Wales check coat from Emilia Wickstead, Colman brought a touch of irreverent glamour to the proceedings, as the Princess Royal led the investiture ceremony; polished off with a black-veiled fascinator by JBH Millinery, Atelier Swarovski earrings, and dainty mules, the look was more than appropriately regal.

The well-deserved honor continues Colman’s winning streak. After an Oscar victory, Vogue cover, and near-universal praise for her performance on Fleabag, over the past year the British actress has been become a U.S. household name, too; and through it all, her unexpected fashion choices have become part of the charm. Today’s Wickstead coat was traditional thanks to the timeless print, but its voluminous silhouette gave the outfit a modern feel. Colman—along with her stylist, Mary Fellowes—have had plenty of fun this year experimenting with everything from caped Stella McCartney jumpsuits to tulle accented Prada. Still, her latest look was truly fit for a queen.
