Creating a great eye cream is no easy feat. A good under-eye treatment needs to brighten, smooth, and play well with makeup—just to name a few qualities. Ole Henriksen’s Banana Bright Eye Crème checks all the boxes and has been flying off the shelves as Sephora’s best-selling eye cream since its inception in 2017.

But now, the brand has decided to take things one step further and reformulate it to a vegan formula with even more brightening power. “It’s been a few years, so we wanted to upgrade and update the eye cream in both the key ingredient offering, as well as in the benefits,” Ole Henriksen tells BAZAAR.com of the updated formula. “Especially in terms of what’s new and innovative with respect to vitamin C.”

Inspired by the blurred, brightened look of banana powder makeup, the cream instantly adds luminosity to the under eye—this time with a new complex of vitamin C, which features pure ascorbic acid, powerhouse antioxidant glutathione (known to stabilize vitamin C), and real gold. “The gold really allows vitamin C to penetrate the skin more effectively, so the ingredient can work harder and smarter,” Riva Barak, the VP of product development at Ole Henriksen, says.

Going back to the brand’s roots (see: its Lemonade Smoothing Scrub and orange-infused Truth line), Henriksen also decided to add citrus to the mix. A blend of citrus bioflavonoids, including mandarin and grapefruit, helps to decrease the appearance of dark circles even more than the first iteration of the eye cream.

The biggest upgrade, however, is the vegan formula, compared to the original that contained beeswax; the new one also boasts a whipped, butter-like texture. It also still sinks into the skin within seconds. Plus, the new version is fragrance free, so it won’t irritate your eye area (another major ask of an eye cream).

If you’re a fan of the original, don’t fret. The new-and-improved formula still contains the banana-tinted, light-reflecting pigments, as well as both water-soluble and oil-soluble forms of vitamin C. “The illumination is stronger than ever before,” Henriksen says.

The founder also explains that making an eye cream that plays well with makeup was another priority. The brand says that the new formula improves the wear of your concealer and is crease resistant. “We had to go to town with this new version and truly improve on the formulation,” he adds. “What we arrived at was this new beautiful, buttery texture that gives instant gratification.”

The new and improved Banana Bright+ Eye Crème is available now online at olehenriksen.com and sephora.com.
