Meet Augie. The Tennessee-based golden retriever has stolen the hearts of folks across the globe thanks to being the oldest golden retriever in history, according to Golden Hearts Retrievers Rescue. The white-faced golden celebrated her 20th birthday on April 24 and it’s safe to say the internet is in love.

Golden retrievers typically live 10 to 12 years, but Augie defied the odds. According to the AKC's guidelines for calculating "dog years," Augie is 114. Despite her age, Augie (short for August) is still quite active.

"She can still move around well (although she’s a bit shaky when she first gets up) and enjoys daily walks around the yard," Jennifer Hetterscheidt, Augie’s owner, told Golden Hearts. "Since she was diagnosed with some kidney issues when she was 14, she now eats a mixture of wet and dry Hill’s Prescription Diet k/d, and takes some supplements for her kidneys and joints."

The best part is that Augie was a senior rescue. Jennifer and her husband Steve Hetterscheidt rescued her when she was 14 under the assumption that many people wouldn’t want to take in an older dog. Knowing that most goldens don’t even live to 14, they had no idea what a delightful surprise they were in for.
