OK, So, Twin Flames Are *Not* Actually the Same as Soulmates—Here's How To Tell the Difference

At first glance, the terms "twin flame" vs. "soulmate" seem like the same thing, but they are in fact two very different terms. A twin flame is two halves of the same soul that split before coming back to Earth, reincarnated. A soulmate is two different souls that share the same energy and have undeniable compatibility.

And because the two terms can be a bit confusing, we chatted with Monica Reyna, a Reiki Master Teacher, Mind Body Specialist and Sound Healing Therapist from Grand Rapids, Michigan, and asked her to weigh in on the difference between the two.

Not sure, but maybe you think you have met your soulmate or twin flame or both? Let's dive in.

Twin Flame vs. Soulmate

Both twin flames and soulmates provide special connections between two people. However, is it possible to have a twin flame AND a soulmate in our lives? “Yes!" Reyna shares. "However, although you can have many soulmates in your lifetime, you can only have one twin flame.”

What Is a Twin Flame?

A twin flame is even beyond what people imagine for a soulmate. There is only one twin flame per person. That is because, as Reyna clears up for us, "A twin flame is a soul that has split in half and a soulmate is someone that you share a deep connection with.” Being that the person that is your twin flame is the other half of your soul, it will feel like déjà vu when confronted by them.

Many people’s first encounters with their twin flame are intensely rapturous meetings. It could be love at first sight, but not all twin flame relationships are sexual in nature.

Since meeting your twin flame could be the most powerful part of your journey here on earth, the Reiki Master tells us, “These connections aren’t always romantic, and sometimes not easy or pleasurable. They are meant for growth.”

According to Reyna, that tumultuous interaction with your twin flame can often “reflect things within you that need to heal, change, grow and evolve."

What Is a Soulmate?

Unlike twin flames who are sparked from two halves of one soul, soulmates are inherently compatible individuals who don’t uphold the same level of risk.

You can have many soulmates in your lifetime, referred to by Reyna as when "the vibe is on point, meaning, we are on the same frequency and share a connection—a knowing that we’ve known one another before.”

Although relationships with soulmates are infinite, they can overlap with the different kinds of soulmates that come to you throughout your lifetime. The connection you have with a soulmate is profound but should never make you feel dependent or needy in any way. Monica states, "The connection is easy and loving. This can be a friendship, romantic interest or relationship and even a family relationship dynamic.”

Which Is Better, Twin Flame or Soulmate?

Soulmates are the rare individuals who connect with you perfectly. They provide you with everything that you need just as a “soul” family would.

Twin flames come with turbulence, lessons and passion, and they are a direct reflection of yourself. When meeting a twin flame, it should feel like a missing link has been found in your life.

The better questions to ask instead include: Which would you rather have? Or, which one do you need most in your life right now?

Can You Be Both a Twin Flame and Soulmate?

You could be someone’s twin flame and another’s soulmate, but it would not be for the same person, according to Reyna.

If you are someone’s twin flame, your connection would literally be like looking in the mirror at yourself. Being a person’s twin flame means you are there to help that person to learn something vital in their life.

If you are someone’s soulmate, you are sharing a peaceful commonality—the relationship is seamless and easy.

How Can You Tell the Difference Between Your Twin Flame and Your Soulmate?

"[Your] soulmate is someone that you share a deep connection with—same vibration," Reyna says. Whereas a twin flame is someone that carries the other half of your soul.

Reyna reminds us, "Although you can have many soulmates in your lifetime, you can only have one twin flame."
