An Oil Heir Turned Tech Investor Is Asking $27 Million for a Lakefront Home in Austin, Texas

Last summer, D Magazine reported that tech investor Alex Davis, the 40-something-year-old grandson of late billionaire Marvin Davis, a wildcatter who once owned the film studio 20th Century Fox and sold it to Rupert Murdoch, had ditched Austin and moved to Dallas.

The Big D must be working out because Davis, the founder and CEO of the Austin-based investment firm Disruptive, and his wife Lindsay have hoisted their former home on the shore of Lake Austin on the market with the Austin Luxury Group at Compass for a scintilla shy of $27 million.

The 9,300-square-foot home, about 7 miles northwest of downtown and another five miles from the prestigious Austin Country Club, presides over nearly half an acre of gated and secured grounds—there’s even a security pavilion just outside the entry gates—with about 115 feet of shoreline.

The foyer includes an opulent donut-shaped chandelier, a sweeping staircase, and a minimalist wet bar.

The home was designed by Shiflet Richardson Architects to facilitate casual entertaining and an easy flow between the house and the lakeside backyard’s many amenities. Just inside the glass and steel front doors, a sweeping staircase reminiscent of a Parisian hôtel particulier is a curvaceous counterpoint to a sleek, minimalist wet bar. In addition to the light-filled great room, which comprises a fireside lounge, a spacious dining area, and an open-concept gourmet kitchen, there is a home office, a media lounge, and a second-floor family room that spills out to a large deck.

Among the six bedrooms and six-and-a-half baths is a bunk room with built-in bunk beds and a serene, lake-view homeowner’s retreat that includes two fitted walk-in closets and an attached bath and spa area decked out with a beverage fridge, a steam shower, and a temperature-controlled plunge pool.

A large loggia outside the main-floor great room has an outdoor fireplace that is surmounted by a flat-screen TV, while a large swath of artificial lawn surrounds the pool and spillover spa. There’s also a putting green, a lakeside gas firepit, and, next to the two-story boathouse, an open-air pavilion with a built-in grill and snack bar. The upper level of the boathouse is the perfect spot to catch any cool breezes that blow off the water during the Lonestar State’s hot and humid summer months. Among the estate’s other creature comforts are an elevator, a comprehensive home automation system, and a whole-house generator.

The Davises have been quite active in the real estate market over the last year or so. Not only did they reportedly buy a big house in the tony Highland Park area of Dallas last year, but they also sold a condo on Miami Beach’s Fisher Island for $18.5 million and shortly thereafter took in $12 million on the sale of a large house in a ritzy gated resort community in La Quinta, California.
