Singer, songwriter and producer Smokey Robinson has been blessing us with hits since the early 50s, both as a frontman for The Miracles and as a solo artist. Diana Ross once said, “If a great writer is a poet, and a great poet is a genius, then Smokey Robinson is a miracle.” But while most people his age spend their days on the golf course, playing BINGO, or running for president, the 84-year-old crooner is proving to anyone who might have doubts that he still has a lot of life left in him.
Robinson, who is known for writing thousands of love songs, including “The Way You Do the Things You Do” for The Temptations and “My Guy” for Mary Wells, is still hypnotizing people with his voice and his moves. He completely brought the house down in an October 2023 Tiny Desk concert with hits like “Being With You,” “Tears of a Clown” and “Cruising.”
His latest album, 2023's GASMS, includes some seriously sensual tracks like “I Wanna Know Your Body” and “I Fit In There.” And it was a now-viral IG video of Robinson moving his hips during a surprisingly sensual performance of “Cruisin’,” which proved that even in his mid-80s, he still knows how to command an audience.
