It's Official: 'Yellowstone' to End After Season 5

Yellowstone is ending. Paramount Network broke the news on Friday morning, confirming what fans have long feared would be the case: Season 5 will be the show's last. The hit Western will start airing its final episodes in November. From there, we can expect a spinoff.

The Dutton story continues, picking up where Yellowstone leaves off in another epic tale,” 101 Studios CEO David Glasser said “We are thrilled to bring this new journey to audiences around the world.”

The offshoot doesn't have a title or premise just yet, but you can expect rumors to heat up fast that it will star Matthew McConaughey, who has reportedly been in talks for a spinoff for a while now. Regardless, we should have answers about the project soon enough, as it is expected to debut in December on Paramount Network and then stream on Paramount+.

Earlier this week, ET reported that Costner wouldn't return to the series after Season 5. That wasn't exactly a surprise—the actor, who plays family patriarch John Dutton, has been rumored to be on the outs with creator Taylor Sheridan for months now, with Deadline reporting that the two were butting heads over how much Costner was willing to shoot. (He allegedly only wanted to work one week on the second half of Season 5, which includes eight episodes.) At the time, Costner's attorney called that claim “an absolute lie."

In a statement, Chris McCarthy, President & CEO of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios said, “Yellowstone has been the cornerstone on which we have launched an entire universe of global hits—from 1883 to Tulsa King, and I am confident our Yellowstone sequel will be another big hit, thanks to the brilliant creative mind of Taylor Sheridan and our incredible casts who bring these shows to life.”
