This Is My Official Request to Ban Wearing a Plain Old Tux on the Red Carpet

From Cosmopolitan

The Golden Globes were last night, and as per usual, the women absolutely brought it in the fashion department. We had body chains! Completely see-through dresses! Bows so big they could fit on a car! But when it came to the dudes, we saw the same old black tux and black shoes routine, like they've been rocking since the dawn of red carpet time. No originality, and no creativity. You know what? I'm over it. Celebrity men, I hate to break it to you, but it's 2020, and your vanilla ass tux is boring.

Let's face it, the reason we watch the Golden Globes and the Oscars is because we like when all our Hollywood faves get dressed up. The anticipation of waiting to see what someone like Reese Witherspoon will hit the red carpet in is half the fun. That excitement has never translated to men, because generally, they all wear the exact same thing. I'm not sitting here on the edge of my seat waiting to see what someone like Taron Egerton is going to rock (no offense, Taron). Why does it have to be that way, though? Why can't we be just as surprised by the guys as we are by the girls?

To be fair, we saw some creativity from people like Billy Porter, Karamo Brown, Nicholas Braun, and Jason Momoa.

But on the other hand, we also got a lot of....

And sure, the classic tux is the ultimate symbol of the sophisticated man. It's also played out. What makes it so disappointing is not that these guys look bad, but that there are so many color and accessory options they're not even considering. Like, I don't love Jason Momoa's entire look, but I am very into the fact that he went for a statement necklace and matched that to his jacket. That's different!

And, taking it even further, when someone like Chadwick Boseman walks onto the red carpet wearing something like this...

It's like a breath of fresh air, and serves as a break from the monotonous parade of black tuxes that make the red carpet look like that movie March of the Penguins. And let's not forget that at this same awards show a year ago, Timothée Chalamet wore the harness heard 'round the world.

I mean, if the guys need any inspo, they should just take a page out of Phoebe Waller-Bridge's playbook.

I'm not saying I want guys to ditch the tux completely. That would be ludicrous, because like you can see above, people like Brad Pitt can rock the sh*t out of a tux. But think about the difference between how much thought goes into every look worn by a woman on the red carpet, and the lack of creativity that comes with the men's. Nothing says male privilege quite like being able to put on the exact same outfit, time after time, for the biggest events of the year, while the women around you are bending over backwards to look on-trend.

And it's not just about the fact that opting for the plain black number is lazy. There's something inherently attractive about a guy who looks at the typical Hollywood uniform and says, "Keep it." It's about taking a risk and doing something that's a little bit out of your comfort zone. It's about being comfortable enough with your masculinity to throw out the rule book. That's the kind of energy we want and need in our men from here on out.

Here is my official declaration: The plain old black tux is officially a cop out. It's 2020, boys. Let's f*ck sh*t up in the wardrobe department.
