It’s Official: Cate Blanchett’s Sleeves Just Marked the Return of the ’80s

Cate Blanchett’s new film, Where’d You Go, Bernadette?, centers on a mother who goes missing under mysterious circumstances. But last night, the 50-year-old Oscar winner put a totally different mystery to rest. If there was any question about whether or not ’80s fashion is back, Blanchett answered with a resounding yes.

Blanchett donned an Alexander McQueen suit from the fall/winter 2019 collection on the red carpet at a screening of her new film last night. The sleek black pantsuit was all business until you got to the sleeves, which were fashioned from royal blue silk and were as voluminous as a balloon on each shoulder. See for yourself.

Having flashbacks to your ’80s prom dress? We don’t blame you. It’s dramatic, but for a woman who loves to play with fashion as much as Blanchett, it kind of works. Maybe.

The Where’d You Go, Bernadette star kept the rest of her ensemble relatively simple, which was probably for the best. She paired the look with a stunning Ana Khouri Haute Joaillerie diamond and gold Mirian ring ($6,282) and Fallon Bar Graph earrings ($195), which are made from cubic zirconia and pavé crystals. She let her jewels shine with a side-swept updo that seemed very simpatico with her coiled puff sleeves. Blanchett also carried a custom Valextra La Scala clutch in black ($1,250) for the occasion and wore black pointed-toe silk heels.

One thing’s for sure: Bernadette may vanish in the film, but there’s no missing Cate Blanchett’s sleeves.
