It doesn’t take a chromotherapy expert to sense that Ib Kamara was in a good mood while working at his latest effort as art and image director of Off-White. The touches of pink he included in the youthful collection give it away, lightening up the streetwear nature of the brand built by Virgil Abloh and subtly sugar coating some of its signifiers.

“I’m very hopeful. Optimism is a big thing in Off-White and we need to stay optimistic,” Kamara confirmed during a walk-through.

A trip to Japan was behind his injection of “a cute feel and a bit of love” into both women’s and men’s clothes. Floral prints here, candy-hued furry details and accessories there and Off-White staples in solid pink aplenty: these elements made for a language shared across genders, yet translated differently in the two propositions. While women exuded fierceness, men’s tough and sporty attitude were softened by the overall gentler sensibility.

The feminine lineup still ran the gamut from the sporty gal to the extra girly spirit, from the lady-like woman to the seductive night owl, encompassing floral jersey frocks stretching over the body or sensually draped on it; sequined pencil skirts trimmed with pearls; unfussy slipdresses and satin shirts with lingerie details, and a strong focus on tweed ensembles combined with hoodies and knee-high leather boots.

The sporty reference etched in the brand’s DNA was best expressed by nylon boxing shorts turned pretty by delicate passementerie as well as Off-White’s signature varsity jackets with loud branding that were here dotted by pearls.

The brand’s key item also appeared in the men’s offering, which additionally spotlighted richly embroidered bomber jackets, tracksuits meant to be worn under sartorial coats and blazers as well as denim pieces (too) heavy on branding.

“It’s really about embracing our American-ess. I want to make sure that America and the street [attitude] stay within the brand,” Kamara said. “Even though we go out into the world and look for interesting inspirations, we always come back home to who we are, and we infuse that into the collections we’re developing.”
