Off-White Creates a Space Wardrobe for Your Trip to the Moon

And it's Ibrahim Kamara's debut collection as creative director.

For Fall 2023Off-White imagined what our space wardrobe will be. It's not your average "2001: A Space Odyssey" outfit, nor something you'd see in "Interstellar" (no shade to Matthew McConaughey or Anne Hathaway). The looks are way cooler — like what would you would dream of wearing on the moon if you could breathe the air and survive the temperature.

A giant silver orb sat in the center of the room, with an electric guitar kicking off the show titled "Lunar Delivery." Models emerged wearing one detail that then appeared in almost every look of the collection: silver hoops. They cuffed cornrows and served as grommets on jackets, shirts and skirts — and basically everything else. As for the clothes themselves, dégradé ensembles colored yellow-green-orange-brown with wittily distressed details. One leather blazer had people printed onto it, while hooded dresses came right alongside pleated leather skirts with, you guessed it, even more grommets.

For accessories, some bracelets looked more like tiny wheels taken from a space junkyard that belonged to an old space rover. Bulky, spheric earrings gave models' heads with... an alien-like silhouette and belts had utilitarian touches with seatbelt-inspired buckles. There were gold caps on shoes, and sunglasses with four lenses that looked to have been inspired by Daft Punk robots. A silver dress with lines (as in, lines in the sand) sculpted the body's silhouette. Varsity jackets came with an especially galactic touch.

It was endless cool.

Off-White is a brand rooted in inspiration and aspiration, but it faced an uncertain future after the passing of Virgil Abloh, who created the brand and streetwear-luxury movement. Ibrahim Kamara was named art and image director of Off-White in May 2022, and with Fall 2023, he debuts his first collection as creative head, carrying the torch to give the brand a new life. After all, the luxury fashion house said it was on "the cusp of something new" at its Spring 2023 show. That newness is realized.

"I see V's legacy everywhere. He showed us all what we could be, and inspired people to believe that anything is possible," Kamara wrote in an Instagram post. "Questioning everything was a big part of Virgil's mindset... and my starting point to begin my work at Off-White."

Toward the end of the show, we saw clothes that looked much closer to space suits. One fiery red suit in particular came down the runway with zippers, D loops and cargo pockets all over, only the back was cutout, exposing scales on the skin that looked like Michael B. Jordan's scars as Killmonger in "Black Panther." Naomi Campbell appeared in the show with a walk as regal as ever and a collar on her dress that looked like it was missing its space helmet. She also walked one of the last looks: a relaxed, black dress with a frontal zipper closure. The front row, meanwhile, included Tyga and Jared Leto, while Ice Spice's music played in the show's custom mix that went from guitar to xylophones with heavy reverb.
