Nutritionists Agree: This Is The Worst Salad For Weight Loss (It’s Not Cesar!)

We spoke with Mary Sabat MS, RDN, LD, to find out about the one type of salad that’s the worst for weight loss. Sabat revealed that chef’s salad is the type you want to stay away from.

Chef's Salad

A chef's salad is a classic dish consisting of a variety of ingredients like mixed greens, vegetables, meats (such as ham, turkey, and bacon), cheese, and hard-boiled eggs, often topped with a dressing.

While chef's salads can be nutritious and packed with essential nutrients, they also have the potential to contribute to weight gain if consumed excessively or with high-calorie dressings. The inclusion of meats and cheeses, which can be calorie-dense, along with creamy dressings, can significantly increase the overall calorie content of the salad.

"Deli meats, cheese, and creamy dressings can significantly increase the calorie content of the salad. These ingredients are often dense in calories and can add up quickly, leading to a higher calorie intake than anticipated. The combination of cheese, eggs, and creamy dressings can result in a salad that's high in unhealthy saturated fats, which can contribute to weight gain and other health issues," Sabat says.

To enjoy a chef's salad without promoting weight gain, it's important to be mindful of portion sizes, opt for lean protein sources, incorporate plenty of vegetables, and choose lighter dressing options or use them sparingly. Sabat recommends we add a healthy variety to our salads when trying to promote weight loss.
