'Call the Midwife' Creator Teases "Big News Coming Up" For Nurse Trixie Next Season

Fans of Call the Midwife are accustomed to a certain amount of turnover in the cast. Over the course of the show's 11 seasons (thus far) numerous young nurses have come and gone from the halls of Nonnatus House, but a few stalwarts have also remained to serve the mothers and babies of Poplar.

One mainstay has been Nurse Trixie, played by Helen George, who has been part of the show's core cast since the very first season. So, naturally, many fans were made understandably nervous by Trixie's sudden exit at the end of episode 5 of season 11.

In the episode, Trixie received word that her godmother was ill and she would have to rush to her side to care for her, departing from Poplar with several episodes left to go before the finale. The move was particularly anxiety-inducing for those who had been watching Trixie's blossoming relationship with widower Matthew, which had recently shifted from friendship to romance. So does Trixie's sudden departure mean she'll be gone from the show's future?

Fortunately for fans who adore Trixie (and are invested in her growing romance with Matthew) the Call the Midwife Twitter account shared a new behind the scenes image from the Christmas Special in May, confirming that Trixie is definitely home for the holidays.

Even better news, George will also return when the show comes back for its 12th season, and it sounds like things will be getting exciting for Trixie. Speaking to the RadioTimes, show creator Heidi Thomas teased the character's return, saying, "Trixie rejoins us. And something interesting and rather wonderful will happen for Trixie this series, so she has big news coming up—which we probably won't unveil just yet."

Fans are, naturally, already abuzz with theories—will she and Matthew break up? Is there an engagement in Trixie's future?—but assuming the show sticks to its traditional schedule of airing a new season at the beginning of the year, we'll likely have quite some time to wait before we find out.

So why did Trixie make such a sudden exit in season 11 anyway? Because George was busy welcoming a baby in real life. Though the show disguised the star's pregnancy for her appearances in the first half of the season, the star stepped away for maternity leave to welcome her daughter, Lark, in November 2021—her second child with fellow Call the Midwife alum Jack Ashton, who played Trixie's one-time fiancée Reverend Tom Hereward.
