Sara Shepard, a mother of two, had picked up additional shifts at St. Louis University Hospital in Missouri in an effort to make her children’s Christmas extra special.

Tragically, on her way to work on Saturday, the 31-year-old was killed when a pickup truck collided into her vehicle, which caused her to drive off the road and hit a guardrail. It is still unknown what caused the driver of the pickup truck to collided with Shepard’s car.

Shepard’s sister-in-law, Becca Hill, described the nurse as a mother who put her kids ahead of everything. “Her whole life was her kids, everything she did was for her kids,” Hill told Fox 2.

The nurse’s death has hit everyone in the family hard, but her brother, Dave, is mourning the loss of two siblings. Just seven months before Shepard’s accident, their brother, James, passed away.

“We’ve learned a lot about grief through this whole process,” Becca said, but added that it’s Shepard’s children, a son and a daughter, who are in the most pain.

St. Louis Hospital said in a statement, “Our hearts are broken to hear of the sudden passing of Sara Shepard. Sara was the epitome of a nurse, talented, knowledgeable, compassionate and dedicated. She was kind-hearted and an advocate for her patients. Sara will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time.”

Angie McBride, Shepard’s cousin, has set up a GoFundMe page in hopes that the donations will help put Shepard’s affairs in order, including making final arrangements, as well as provide Christmas gifts and for the “future needs for her young children.”
