Fans of filmmaker James Wan are likely already familiar with The Conjuring universe. The long-running franchise stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as real-life paranormal investigators and married couple Ed and Lorraine Warren, who detailed their careers through tapes and writings. Each film in The Conjuring series is based on one of the pair's supernatural experiences.

Since The Conjuring first premiered in 2013, there have been two sequels and multiple spin-off films. The first spin-off came right after the first film in 2014, and was titled Annabelle. Warning for anyone who had a fear of creepy dolls growing up: Annabelle probably isn't for you. But the film was a box office success, and has since had a sequel.

Another of The Conjuring's connected films is The Nun. Released in 2018, the film follows a nun (played by Taissa Farmiga, Vera's real-life sister) and a priest who investigate a demonic evil in 1952 Rome. Now, five years later, The Nun II is out on September 8.

Considering how long it's been since the first film, fans possibly need a reminder about how The Nun series relates to The Conjuring. Rather than go back and watch The Conjuring series and The Nun to see how the two are connected, we've got a brief explanation for how the stories are related, and anything else you may want to know before you go and see The Nun II. It's not as complicated as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we promise.

How is The Nun II connected to The Conjuring universe?

In The Conjuring 2, Ed and Lorraine Warren encounter a demonic nun figure named Valak. At the end of the film, Lorraine learns the demon's name and manages to banish it to hell. while audiences may have thought the film would be the last they'd see of Valak, she returns in The Nun.

The Nun movies are actually prequels to The Conjuring series. While The Nun and its sequel take part in the 1950s, The Conjuring is set in the 1970s. Valak torments a young nun throughout the series, and it's only when Lorraine encounters Valak two decades after that we see the demon defeated. That means there's a sizable amount of time between the two film series that The Nun could potentially have a third or more sequels before running up against The Conjuring timeline.
