A No. 2 Pencil Is Fall’s Easiest Hair Accessory

We’re well aware of the choke hold hair bows have had on beauty and fashion for the last few months. But after LaQuan Smith’s Fall/Winter 2024 show on Monday night, Bazaar editors are feeling freshly inspired to put forth the humble No. 2 pencil as a contender for best fall hair accessory.
“I took inspiration from the unapologetic strength and glamour of female power brokers—from executives of 1980s Wall Street to the vixens of Studio 54,” Smith said in a statement about his latest line. In a playful nod to office culture, he punctuated certain looks from the collection with well-placed pencils as hair accessories.
Celebrity and Unilever hairstylist Lacy Redway channeled Smith’s powerhouse inspiration into a series of sculpted buns, braids, and slicked short cuts, perfect for both workday and runway. Redway and her team used a range of essentials from Tresemmé to create each model’s look. “The hair inspo always starts with the collection for me,” she tells Bazaar. “For this show, I wanted to elevate how we see traditional buns by making them feel more cool and modern.”
The team prepped models using Tresemmé’s One Step Blowout Cream and Keratin Smooth Heat Protection Spray, with the brand’s Extra Hold Mousse applied throughout the hair afterward. Stylists then used flat paddle brushes to slick the hair back, and then to blow-dry it until completely dry. The night’s updos were held firmly in place with Tresemmé’s Freeze Hold Hairspray, and completed with a few spritzes of the Keratin Smooth Weightless Silky Shine Spray.
A runway with so much sleek hair—and so many artful, intricate buns—was complemented perfectly its striking makeup stylings, led by celebrity artist Raisa Flowers for Huda Beauty. “I was inspired by the office siren trend,” she says. “And when I first saw the mood board for the collection, it was giving suited and very working woman. Our take incorporates a lot of cool-toned and muted eye shadows, a nice lash, natural complexion with a little highlighter and contour.” While each model wore a bold siren eye, their final lip looks varied between natural nudes and deconstructed reds.
Flowers and team used Huda Beauty’s #FauxFilter foundation, color corrector, and concealer for an even makeup base. The brand’s forthcoming Creamy Obsession eye shadow palettes (launching February 26) were used for the models’ siren eyes, along with the Creamy Kohl Longwear Eye Pencil, 1 Coat Wow! Extra Volumizing & Lifting Mascara, and Hoodie Flares #25 Classic Lashes. And for their signature lip looks, artists used the brand’s Lip Contour 2.0 Automatic Matte Lip Pencil in warm brown, rich brown, and nocturnal, and Power Bullet Matte Lipstick in the shade El Cinco de Mayo.
Along with Smith’s luxe suiting, versatile bodysuits, and tailored outerwear, the statement beauty looks paired with this season’s collection were a clear personification of inner strength and elegance—something that has never been reserved only for the New York runways. Not only is power dressing all the way back, unapologetic beauty is too.
