The Number of Adidas Stores Is Expected to "Contract Slightly"

It's shifting its focus to online shopping.

Adidas has announced that it plans to prioritize its online shopping experience and will begin closing some of its stores.

In an interview with Financial Times, Adidas chief executive Kasper Rorsted detailed the decision, calling their website "the most important store we have in the world." Rostred said the closures should start over the next year. He didn't offer any figures on expected closures, only saying the number would "contract slightly."

As Adidas looks ahead, Rorsted said, the brand hopes to focus more on the online shopping experience. Financial Times reports that the activewear retailer has already introduced a smartphone app in multiple countries, including the United States. The app is expected to expand and will soon be available to customers in Canada and France.

Despite the planned closing of some brick and mortar stores, Rørsted did share that remaining Adidas stores "will be better." The chief executive specifically pointed to their store in Chicago as an example of what they hope to see for the future. The store, which opened in 2017, is the brand's largest ever, High Snobiety reports. Along with offerings from Adidas, the store also features frequent collaborations with local artists.

The news of expected closures for Adidas comes as other retailers including Nine West and Claire's Accessories have declared bankruptcy. In 2017, stores including J.Crew, Payless and Rue 21 also announced store closings.

The continuing closures and reported bankruptcies of many stories has been frequently attributed to an ongoing "retail slump."
