NPR Rewrote Bon Jovi’s ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ to ‘Living on My Hair’

It’s about time that someone wrote a proper ode to the famous hair of famous people. From Jennifer Aniston’s “Rachel” cut by Chris McMillan to Emma Stone’s red hair (FYI, she’s a natural blonde), it’s impossible to separate the celebrity persona from the hairdo. On NPR’s Ask Me Another game show, hosts Lulu Miller and Alix Spiegel rewrote the Bon Jovi song, “Livin’ on a Prayer” as “Living on My Hair” to be about celebrities and their iconic hair. Here are the lyric-questions (we recommend singing them to the tune of “Living on a Prayer,” especially if you have a guitar accompaniment). Can you guess who these six celebrities are?

  • “Rachel served the coffee on Friends / She had a layered shag / with flipped choppy ends / And Ross… / Oy, Ross?”

  • “She says they used to call her the pin-up queen / Model in the ‘50s and the S&M scene / Her jet black tresses were not routine / Her bangs, so short with a sheen!”

  • “Oh, he’s tall for sure / red hair, with a pompadour / talk show host, his string dance we adore / red hair, with a pompadour!”

  • “Drumming in The Roots every night / What’s that in his ‘fro? / Adding to its height / His comb, his comb.”

  • “He says he was a model for romance books / He can’t believe it’s butter though it’s doubtful he cooks / a tall Italian with rugged looks / Long hair…is one of his hooks!”

  • “Oh, she’s on The View / Dreadlocks! That’s a major clue / The Color Purple, and Sister Act 2 / Dreadlocks, That’s a major clue!”

In order, the answers are: Jennifer Aniston, Bettie Page, Conan O’Brien, Questlove, Fabio, and Whoopi Goldberg. These answers might seem obvious to anyone who has ever owned a television, but that precisely proves the point — the hair makes the icon.
