You Can Now Rent the Last Blockbuster Store in the Country for the Ultimate Movie Night

From Country Living

  • Blockbuster was a beloved video-rental store in the ‘80s, ‘90s, and early ‘00s, but has since closed all but one of its many locations.

  • The Bend, Oregon, location remains open and now, for the first time ever, is available as an Airbnb to local guests.

If you and your family ever took a Friday-night trip to Blockbuster in search of the ultimate weekend entertainment back in the day, you’re about to feel super nostalgic.

As you probably know, the video-rental giant shuttered its doors back in 2010. What you might not know, however, is that one location remains.

Welcome to Bend, Oregon—the home of the last Blockbuster video store. While that tidbit alone brings nostalgic visitors from near and far, the fact that the store is now opening to a new kind of business makes it even more alluring.

On Wednesday, August 12, Airbnb took to Instagram to announce that the last remaining Blockbuster is opening its doors to local guests in the form of an Airbnb.

“Feeling nostalgic for... not 2020? The last BLOCKBUSTER® in Bend, Oregon is inviting their neighbors to rewind to the 90s for the ultimate throwback sleepover by listing the store on Airbnb,” the post read.

Now that everyone reading this will want to take a road trip out to Bend, we have to break the news: The overnight stays are limited to locals only.

Nevertheless, we can all bask in the nostalgia that is this truly-genius Airbnb experience.

The listing—which is what they’re describing as one bedroom and a half bath for up to four guests—reads, “Hey Deschutes County residents! Dust off those membership cards for a sleepover inside the world’s last BLOCKBUSTER. When you call dibs on this stay, you’re booking a night back in the 90s, but this time you won’t have to beg your parents to rent the latest horror flick–we’ll give you the keys to the entire store!

“As the last standing location in the world, our BLOCKBUSTER store is an ode to movie magic, simpler times and the sense of community that could once be found in BLOCKBUSTER locations around the world. Over the past few months, we’ve been missing the regular visits from friends, neighbors and tourists from around the world. So, we’re opening our store to three quarantine pods of Deschutes County guests for a socially-distanced movie night, just like those of decades past!"

In offering this experience to locals, the owner—who we can assume to be Sandi (aka the lister)—ensures that the premises will be up to Airbnb's Enhanced Cleaning Protocol standards, which were created with the CDC’s top recommendations in mind.

What’s more, the cost of the stay is just $4 per night, sticking to the tradition of an affordable night of entertainment from the much-loved and ever-missed Blockbuster.
