There are a lot of cool things out there that make us wonder — do they really work? In our I Tried It series, we set out to use them in the real world and have determine that, in fact, they really do.

On Trial: Proper Good Soups

Tester: Danielle St. Pierre, homemade soup enthusiast who is tired of cleaning her damn Dutch oven batch after batch

The Brief: We've likely all tried our fair share of premade, canned, or packaged soups available on grocery store shelves. Sure, some brands are certainly better than others, especially options that are organic, lower in sodium, and made with real ingredients you can actually pronounce.

In my experience, though, I'm always left feeling underwhelmed by most of these soups, finding chicken noodle way too salty, lentil soup watery and bland, or — the worst of all — minestrone with pasta bits completely soggy and obliterated. Cover your ears, Giada!

So, when a new direct-to-consumer soup delivery brand called Proper Good Soups landed in my inbox, offering homemade soups without the trip to the grocery store, endless veggie chopping, or subsequent dish cleaning, I knew I had to try it.

As someone who makes soup regularly, especially during the winter, I'm very picky about the ingredients that go into my batches — from the fresh produce I pick out all the way down to the type of bay leaf I throw in while it simmers (I love these aromatic Turkish beauties, for the record). So let's just say I had my expectations in check while I waited for my Proper Good Soups to arrive at my doorstep.

TL;DR: These soups PROPERLY. BLEW. ME. AWAY.

Seven varieties from the brand's best-selling All Soups Pack arrived at my front door neatly filed into one compact box, without any obnoxious extra packaging waste. A good first impression! Each pouch comes with a color-coded card sleeve that spells out the soup's ingredient list, reheating instructions, and a quirky little tidbit about what makes that particular batch special. To reheat, you simply remove said label, tear the pouch, and either microwave for 90 seconds or pour into a pan and heat on medium until bubbling and hot. I obviously opted for the quicker microwave route. Can you tell I'm sick of doing dishes?!

My hands-down favorite from the brand's lineup is the Meatball Minestrone Soup, which is loaded with beef and pork mini meatballs, heart-healthy farro grains, whole kidney beans, and chunky veggies all cloaked in a thick, tomatoey, grass-fed beef bone broth. I appreciate the thoughtful substitution of farro instead of empty-carb-pasta here, and I also loved that each veggie and bean still retained the perfect amount of al dente chewiness.

Founded by a brother-and-sister duo on a mission to make healthy, convenient meals with clean ingredients, in flexible and transparent packaging, and at a reasonable price, it's no wonder the brand received proper funding to kickstart their dream this past summer. Packaged soups will never be the same again.

The ingredient list for each soup is squeaky clean, incorporating superfoods like coconut milk, bone broth, turmeric, and ginger. The brand also offers a wide variety of keto-friendly soups, plant-based soups, gluten-free options, and even collagen-loaded sippable bone broth packs, which makes these ready-to-heat, shelf-stable soups convenient and diet-inclusive. There's something for everyone.

A note on price: The 7-pack All Soups Pack comes in at around $50 (or $42 if you opt for their subscription service), or $7 per pouch. You can also build your own box to customize which soup varieties you want included in the mix, as well as how many soups you want to be included between four and 18 pouches.

Closing Argument: For the quality, flavor, transparency, and overall convenience these tasty soups provide, I wholeheartedly recommend checking this brand out if you, too, are getting sick of making soup from scratch but can't quite stomach the less-than-stellar packaged soup options out there. Prepare to be proper-floored.
