It’s going to be a great year for airfare with domestic prices predicted to start even cheaper than 2023 and remain low for the next six months.

Overall, January will be the cheapest time to purchase a ticket for this year with prices dropping 11 percent compared to last month, according to a study from Hopper shared with Travel + Leisure. In general, domestic ticket prices in 2024 will be lower than both last year and pre-pandemic levels for the first half of the year.

Prices will then start to rise in the late spring ahead of spring break and the summer season.

"After a busy holiday travel season, we are expecting another strong year for travel ahead — and there’s good news for those planning 2024 trips,” Hayley Berg, the lead economist at Hopper, told T+L, adding, "Flexibility continues to be a key trend for consumers in 2024 coming out of the pandemic. A shift in consumer behavior has solidified in the last three years, with more and more travelers willing to pay extra for products specifically designed to protect them from travel disruptions.”

To score cheap flights, travelers should consider booking in January since Hopper said prices often drop after the holiday travel season. Travelers should also consider flying mid-week with Wednesday typically being the least expensive day and Sunday being the priciest.

Booking early is also a tried-and-true tip to get the best deal. Hopper recommends travelers start monitoring flight prices three to four months before they want to fly. Travelers can set price alerts with companies like Hopper, Google Flights, or Skyscanner.

Travelers are looking for variety in 2024 with popular destinations spanning everywhere from the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas to the entertainment in Orlando, the beaches of Miami, and more. Internationally, travelers are craving warm weather with Cancun and Punta Cana coming in as the two most popular destinations, followed by exploring places like London, Rome, and Tokyo.

"Warm weather, leisure and beach destinations are driving travel plans for 2024,” Berg said. “Those planning to travel internationally in 2024 are looking to London, Rome, Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games and Tokyo for long haul trips next year."
