How to use (and not use) tech to make learning easier

Technology has revolutionized how students learn and study, but you already knew that — after all, you’re reading this article! There are virtual textbooks, interactive digital study guides, and, increasingly, online classes.

But some tech-powered learning methods are more effective than others.

Tech can be a source for on-demand resources and answers to your most challenging study questions. But it can also open the door to distractions. (Have you ever intended to study and wound up scrolling through TikTok for an hour? You’re not alone.) Here are some of the best and worst ways to utilize tech for your schoolwork.

DO utilize resources

Are you struggling with a core concept? Tune in for a virtual lecture after class. Does your backpack already weigh 100 pounds? Try an e-textbook. From research papers to digital flashcards, you have a variety of resources at your fingertips to enhance your learning, expand your knowledge, and find new subjects that might interest you.

DO take online classes

Online learning became more common during the pandemic, and now schools are seeing its full potential. Virtual learning is an excellent option for students who need to miss a class.

DO embrace teamwork

Today, it’s easier than ever to collaborate with your classmates, whether you want a Zoom study buddy or need to work together on a shared Google Doc. You can trade study prompts and questions, start a group chat for your class, share resources, or even make a Slack channel for your group project.

Maura Thomas, a productivity expert, says working with a friend can motivate you to stay on task, even if there’s a computer screen between you. Get the pleasantries out of the way at the beginning of the call, and then get straight to it. “It's like an appointment to work.” she says. “If you only make an appointment with yourself, it's easy to break it.”

DO use productivity apps

While aimless scrolling won't help you study, there are tons of great tools to keep you on track. Thomas recommends keeping your notes in one place, which is another area where tech can help. For focus and organization, try...

DON’T get caught up in distractions

One of the drawbacks of technology is the potential for distractions. Your friends are hanging out on Instagram, people are sharing their easy dinner recipes on TikTok, and your mom is texting you about winter break plans — it’s easy to lose focus. Avoid these traps by hiding your phone or setting your phone to Do Not Disturb mode. “Just seeing the phone — even if it’s face down, even if it’s silent — is a distraction for most people,” says Thomas.

DON’T plagiarize

If you browsed a few sample essays on Uncle Tom’s Cabin before writing your own, it’s very possible to copy someone else’s work without even realizing it. To avoid this, always cite your sources and use plagiarism checkers to ensure your work is original.

DON’T believe everything you read

For every brilliant J-Stor paper, there is an unsourced, error-filled blog post or Wikipedia entry. Always use reliable, vetted sources when reading research papers or finding data.

DON’T forget IRL learning

Tech is best used in conjunction with face-to-face interactions and independent study skills. You want to use tech as a support, not a crutch. While these resources can help you find answers and improve your schoolwork, you should also practice working through problems independently before consulting the internet.

Above all, try to carve out time each day when you can put down your devices and calm your mind free of technology altogether. “Building time into every day that doesn't include technology is really important,” Thomas says.
