There Is Not a Dry Eye on Twitter After Watching Angel and Papi on 'Pose'

Spoilers for Pose Episode 6 ahead.

Angel Evangelista deserves the perfect wedding, and in the newest episode of Pose, she finally got it. While we can thank Elektra for sponsoring the lavish ceremony, the nuptials were special not just for the fairytale setting, but also for its many tear-jerking moments.

First, let’s backtrack to just before the big event. After Papi decides to raise his son from a previous relationship, Angel gets cold feet. She isn’t ready to be a mom yet. She nearly cancels the wedding, but thanks to some coaxing from Blanca, she stays the course. Angel first meets with her father to tell him she’s getting hitched, but he does not accept the news. The rejection makes Angel realize how loving and supportive Papi has been all this time. She returns to him and agrees to co-parent his son, Beto, in a heartwarming reunion over pancakes. (Papi also gets extra points for teaching his child why it's okay to cry.)

In the dressing room the day of the wedding, Angel receives some emotional speeches and gifts from her sisters. Something old: Blanca’s mother’s cookbook. Something new: A mink coat from Barney’s, courtesy of Elektra. Something borrowed: a one-month chip from Lulu, to mark her recovery from drug use. Something blue: Candy’s signature hammer, wrapped in a Tiffany’s box. Upon opening the last gift, Angel has a vision of Candy, who appears across the room at a piano to bestow the bride with words of wisdom. (A glamorous cameo from Angelica Ross.)

The wedding itself is in a league of its own. There is an instrumental of Vanessa Williams’s “Save the Best for Last.” There’s Papi looking gorgeous in his all-white tuxedo. There’s nearly half the ballroom community wearing wedding dresses provided by Elektra. Then, Angel enters in a strapless wedding gown adorned with pink flowers. Papi starts crying (and so do we, again). Pray Tell, who is officiating the wedding, echoes a point Elektra previously made: This union is about more than Angel and Papi’s love story; it’s a milestone for their community as a whole.

As the bride and groom exchange vows, Angel tearfully says, “I stayed up a lot of nights wondering if I could marry you. … Because I never had an example of what true love looks like.” She remembers how her parents abandoned her, and how she found safety in the ball scene—and in her future husband. “We got about a hundred examples of unconditional, true love here in this room,” she adds.

As she puts the ring on Papi’s finger, it seems impossible for him to top this speech, but alas, he does. Esteban Alberto Martinez-Evangelista breaks out into song, serenading Angel with All-4-One’s “I Swear” like he came straight out of a rom-com. Ricky and the crowd join in. Angel is a teary mess and so is everyone else watching.

This episode—the penultimate one of Pose, ever—was a labor of love, written and directed by Janet Mock. "No episode means more to me than this one," she tweeted as it aired. "It’s a love letter to every single one of us told that who we are would be an obstacle to being loved and loving. I hope 'Something Old, Something New,' is a balm and a new tale we can tell of ourselves."

The series finale of Pose airs next Sunday on FX.
