As the days slowly start becoming shorter and fall collections warmly welcome in the new season, it’s easy to call it a wrap on summer 2019, but there’s actually one more floral phenomenon you need to see before September 23. California had its Instagram-famous wildflower super bloom in March (and then another one in the mountains), but North Dakota’s sunflower super bloom gives a stunning end to the summer with breathtaking yellow fields.

From early to mid-August, the entire state of North Dakota bursts into bloom, thanks to a reported 480,000 acres of sunflower planting, according to the National Sunflower Association.

“As one of the top producers of sunflowers, North Dakota offers some of the largest and most scenic sunflower fields in the United States,” said Sara Otte Coleman, Director of the North Dakota Tourism Division, in a statement. “Our golden fields attract visitors who are drawn to the simple beauty found across the state each summer. Canola, flax, barley, and wheat also provide a patchwork of color through the summer and fall."

Of course, it goes without saying that if you choose to make the trip to North Dakota before August ends, remember to be mindful when you're snapping pictures by the tall sunflowers—watch where you step so as to not trample flowers or knock them over. It's especially important that you ask the landowner's permission before stepping into their property.

And in true hospitality fashion, the North Dakota Tourism Division has pinpointed the best places to visit for the best views:

  • Mott

  • Aneta

  • Mohall

  • Bismarck

  • Lakota

  • Casselton
