A North Carolina Chick-fil-A Wanted To Pay Volunteers In Chicken
Fans of Chick-fil-A were left scratching their heads after a peculiar Facebook post from a location in Hendersonville, North Carolina, went viral. The Washington Post reports that the Facebook message, which was posted on Tuesday, July 26, reads: “We are looking for volunteers for our new Drive Thru Express! Earn 5 free entrees per shift (1 hr) worked. Message us for details.”
The Facebook post, which has since been deleted, was predictably met with backlash. People have called out its attempts to seemingly skirt the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Created in 1938, the FLSA is intended to establish minimum wage, overtime pay, record keeping, and youth employment standards.
The Chick-fil-A location initially defended their volunteer program, writing “We’ve had multiple people sign up and enjoy doing and have done it multiple times. People who sign up for this chose it voluntarily." But a spokesperson for Chick-fil-A has since confirmed that the Hendersonville location has “decided to end this program.”
“Most restaurants are individually owned and operated, and it was a program at an individually owned restaurant. This was not endorsed by Chick-fil-A, Inc.,” a company rep told The Washington Post.
Customers have expressed their disappointment with the now-defunct volunteer program. The Google rating for the Hendersonville Chick-fil-A has dropped to a 4.2, with many one-star reviews calling out the scheme for being "highly unethical" and "immoral."
