Will There Be a Normal People Season 2?
When a much-loved book is adapted for film or television, fans are always worried that the new take will fall flat—but thankfully, with Hulu's Normal People, an adaptation of Sally Rooney's novel by the same name, that was not the case.
The show was widely praised for its approach, which hewed close to the source material, albeit with a few small tweaks. But now, those who adored the series want to know: will it return for a second run? Below, what we know about a possible Normal People season two.
Nothing has been confirmed.
Neither Hulu nor any of the show's creators have announced plans for a second season—and there's also the issue that the novel's plot was mostly used up by season one.
There is some reason for hope, though.
"We're not thinking about a second season at the moment," the show's producer, Ed Guiney, told the Hollywood Reporter in April. "Maybe in the future at some point in time. What we are doing is the same team are adapting Conversations With Friends, which is Sally's first book. Obviously [it] is a cousin of Normal People in a way, but it's also quite different."
He later added, "It feels like we tell a very complete story about these characters' lives, and so it's not something we're moving to do. Maybe there's a version of it down the line."
Director Lenny Abrahamson told the Radio Times, "I have a fantasy of doing a kind of ten year seeing where they are in ten years time sort of thing, if I’m not too decrepit at that point."
If it was critical recognition they were waiting for, they've gotten it.
Normal People was a certified hit among critics—a fact that certainly won't hurt, and might help, its odds of renewal. In addition to copious positive reviews, the series received four Emmy nominations, recognizing the show's casting, writing, directing, and (of course) the acting force that is Paul Mescal. It also earned two Golden Globe nods: best limited series, and best actress for Daisy Edgar-Jones.
And the main actors seem to be onboard.
"I think what’s glorious about it is that the book definitely feels final about their lives... But I put my hand up and say I’d play Connell until the cows come home," Paul Mescal told the Radio Times.
"Same. Yeah, very much so," agreed Daisy Edgar-Jones, who plays Normal People's Marianne.
