No Surprise Here! The Top U.S. Travel Destinations for 2019 Are (Mostly) at the Beach

As the new year rolls around, there’s no better time to reflect on where you’ve been and where you’re going next—literally. But if you’re stumped on where you’d like your travels to take you in the next 12 months, a new trend report has some intel that might make your decision a little easier.

According to HomeAway, five destinations across the U.S. are topping everyone’s wish lists—and a whopping four of them are coastal.

To determine the rankings, the vacation rental site culled together booking data from its more than 2 million home listings. And while Gatlinburg, Tennessee, leads the pack as the most popular vacation destination in the U.S., the next three all reside along the calm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Topping the list of beachy destinations is Gulf Shores, Alabama, followed closely by Panama City Beach, Florida, and Miramar and Rosemary Beach, Florida. Each of the three destinations lies along a 120-mile stretch of idyllic Gulf coastline that’s renowned for its warm waters and white sand beaches. They’re all also rife with super-sized rental homes with drool-worthy amenities, from gourmet kitchens to swimming pools, making multi-family escapes a breeze to plan.

But if you’re looking for a beach escape that feels a bit more far-flung, perhaps 2019 is the year you head to Hawaii. Rounding out the list of the top five trending destinations is Maui, where you’ll find tropical escapes with breezy lanais just steps from the Pacific.
