No, Sofia Vergara Hasn’t Gotten Plastic Surgery: ‘It’s Called F-cking I’m Old!’

Yes, we know: Sofia Vergara looks amazing, but it’s not because of whatever plastic surgery the internet trolls have accused her of getting done. And yes, she did just launch her own sun care line, Toty, but she’s not just hopping on the celebrity beauty brand bandwagon.

In fact, Vergara has wanted to create her own sunscreen for three decades to help fill a gap that’s been plaguing the US market: White casts on darker skin tones. “In the ’90s I read in a magazine that sun was the enemy for aging, so I started to try to consciously not tan on my face,” Vergara tells Glamour. “But trying to find sunblocks—it was a nightmare. They were all super white.”

It wasn’t until one of her frequent trips to Spain that Vergara found a sunscreen that worked for her skin. But unlike most people who fall in love with cosmetics they find abroad, she didn’t just stock up and go home: she literally partnered with the cosmetic labs responsible to bring her own version to the US.

Now that Toty is here, Vergara remains realistic about what the products can do. “It’s not that you’re going to look 20 years younger. It’s not plastic surgery, unfortunately,” she tells Glamour. “But it is going to transform your skin!”

On that note, the 51-year-old would like to reiterate that all those plastic surgery accusations you’re making in her comments are completely unmerited—though they do make her laugh.

“Sometimes I read messages—I avoid reading comments because, for what? It’s usually people that are in a bad mood or depressed or jealous,” Vergara says. “I read it and it’s like, ‘She has done so much stuff to herself that she doesn’t even look like her anymore.’ And I’m thinking, It’s not like you have plastic surgery to look worse than before, come on!”

Oh, and in case it’s not obvious: Yes, the Modern Family star really is as funny—and straightforward—as her iconic character Gloria Delgado-Pritchett. “I always want to say, ‘No, it’s called aging! It’s called fucking I’m old! That’s why I look different!’”

Of course, Vergara does have some tweakments she swears by, plus a fair share of beauty and skin care rules. Ahead, Sofia Vergara shares all, plus her advice for fellow Latinas in business, upcoming projects, and the one piece of advice she’d give to her younger self (and probably you too).

Glamour: What inspired you to launch your own sun care brand?

Sofia Vergara: It’s been something that I wanted to do for a long time. In the ’90s, when I started realizing that sunblock was so important for your face for aging. I did a lot of damage to myself with the sun because living in South America, in Colombia, we don’t even have seasons. It’s all year long sun.

So I’ve always been on a quest to find the perfect combination of sunscreen and makeup. On one of my trips in Europe, I found this product from Cantabria Labs and I started using it. I had used it for 12 years until I said, “Why don’t I just bring my own version of it to the US?” There weren’t many options of an amazing foundation with real SPF 50 sunblock.

Unfortunately, I took a little bit too long and now there are a lot of more products like that. But there is something really special about Toty’s Ilumina because it’s like a balm. It has a lot of scientific research. It’s not like it’s a little bit of foundation with a little bit of sunblock or a little bit of sunblock with a little bit of foundation. No, it’s the real thing. It’s major, major protection with major coverage. That’s how we launched Toty in June.

What about the Transforma AHA Serum?

I thought it was the perfect combination because if you’re like me and did a lot of damage with the sun, it will correct all of that. It’s not just because I’m saying it—it’s been proven in the laboratory. It’s been tested on women. It makes melasma and sun spots fade away little by little. It makes the pores look smaller. It gives you more luminosity and firmness.

You’ve obviously learned a lot about beauty, and especially skin care, over the years. What’s one beauty rule that you swear by?

I wish I had only one. There’s a million I’m obsessed with. I always wash my face after going to bed. I try to avoid the sun on my face no matter what. I go on vacations and I’m not that diligent, to be honest with you, with the body because it’s nice to feel a little sun, a little tan. But the face—it’s funny, because my body’s always so much darker than my face. My face is like a ghost. It doesn’t even match my body. It’s because I use Ilumina. I’ve been using [a version of] it for 12 years.

What are some other desert island beauty products you can’t live without?

I love Shu Uemura shampoos. They have changed my hair. I have to do a lot of things to it while I’m working. Sometimes they curl your hair, straighten your hair, pull your hair, color your hair. I’ve been using it for a year now and it’s really good.

Do you do any skin treatments or injections?

I do little things here and there. I do a lot of micro-needling when I can. Also, I don’t have downtime. I wish I had downtime from work. I would do a lot more shit. But I do microneedling, little lasers for capillaries because I have rosacea. I do Botox in my eyes and in my neck regularly. Little things that I don’t need to sit in my house for a month because, unfortunately, I can’t. And products. I like products.

Latinas make up a huge percentage of beauty consumers in the US, but much of the industry isn’t geared towards them, while many Latin-founded and -owned companies struggle to find investors. What advice do you have for Latinas in the beauty industry?

You have to keep going. It is harder, not only in the beauty community. Finding roles is harder. It’s everywhere. But I don’t take it personally. It just makes me want to do things to create more things, more opportunities for ourselves. Not just complaining, “Oh, they’re not making, doing, giving.” It’s all about, “They’re not, they’re not.” It’s like, “Okay, so let's do it for ourselves!” For example, I work with Walmart, and I created a clothing line that is designed for Latinas’ bodies.

Toty is also very directed towards the Latina girl that loves beauty because we have all the shades for Latinas. With Transforma, the Latina girls need it because we get melasma and have specific concerns. I just try to include Latinas in everything I do. And you have to keep doing. We just have to keep trying.

Was there ever a role you wanted that you didn’t get?

No.

Well, then good! Perfect!

I mean, don’t forget, I haven’t been acting too much for a long time [outside of Modern Family]. I did Modern Family for 11 years and that was amazing, and now I’m doing Griselda and that is coming out in January on Netflix. That was a really crazy, challenging job, because I had to be three hours in hair and makeup before starting shooting, and then one hour removing the whole fucking thing before going to bed.

That was really crazy. I’m very excited because we’re going to do a huge press tour now in January, and there’s a lot of Latin actors in it. I think they’re the best actors in Latin America. We were able to have them for the series because it’s half in English and half in Spanish.

And finally, what is one piece of advice that you would give your younger self?

Protect from the fucking sun my chest! Because I forgot! And then work out more. I didn’t understand that working out was not just for looking great. I started working out very late. I hate it. I would’ve liked to realize that it was good for your health too.
